Not sure the .340 Ghz is worth $68 more.

P.S. someone might as well just go for it, and put in a Q9550, Quad Processor, those are $170 @ Microcenter on sale. It is a 95W chip though (still a 45nm chip), so you would have to figure out some kind of fan to go onto the heat sink, may not be a good idea. 2.83Ghz, 12MB cache, 95W.

Right, the E8200 is pretty sweet spot if you are looking for a little lower temp but still got the 6MB cache! I got a pretty good deal for the E8400 (close to the E8200) price :TR4M:

Current the E8200 max temp is 67 C running Prime, been stable for 2 hours, will shut down completely and go through the burn in cycle tomorrow. Hope the max temp will go even lower.

The Qxxxx will be very though on the EX49x and I think the temp will skyrocket! And Quad is a must I think if you want to pay premium for the "s" which is 65W rated, it should be okay.

The reviews say the Q9550S isn't worth the additional $, and that the performance isn't that much different nor is their a huge difference in the power consumption.. the conclusion, is, if you have a mobo that can "undervolt", the Q9550 will perform just as well as the Q9550S. We just don't know how much adjustability we have on the processor voltage on the EX490/EX495.

Well my EX490 just arrived today. Aside from doing the initial installation to make sure the thing isn't DOA. It wasn't long before I dropped in the e7500 along with 1 rice-grain size of Arctic Silver. Rebooted the sucker two times and everything seems to got picked up nicely. I AM keeping an eye on the temp as it currently idles at 43C.

Not too worry about that at this time. Might let it run over night and see what the temps show tomorrow. In the meantime, I am enjoy the different color LEDs lighting up the room. :sanjuan: :TR4M: :encore:

Hopefully, I won't be back tomorrow with some freaked out SOS post...

Danny,

Enjoy that e7500! I am really loving mine.

If your CPU is doing anything but idle at 0% cpu it will run in the low 40's from what I have seen with mine. When the CPU is up to the 20-25% mark it runs about 50-52c and full tilt it is at around 63c. When I'm at 0% cpu it sits around 35c.

I didn't use AS5 as I didn't have any around but pulled out some old crap from years ago and it works fine. Not like we are OC'n these things! Heck most of the time my CPU is stepped down to 1600mhz.

Chris

My E8400 idle at 32C and 65C at 100% loading

With my e7500 doing a video conversion, the temp seems to bounce between 55c to 61c. Fan speed is between 1240 -1350rpm.

I am not sure these numbers would justify a re-pasting of the Artic Silver, yet. It DOES still idle at 43c the day after CPU replacement, however. I might wait another few days before making a decision if I can live with 43c idling temps, since the most heavy lifting this box will ever do is video conversions.

I used a small about of AS paste (1 rice grain size) in the middle of the CPU and cleaned the old paste off with alcohol and my curing process has been to do video conversions and then shutdowns.

Any advice you have that may help or point me to the right direction to get the temps a few degrees lower would be greatly appreciated.

First post; just wanted to thank the community and specifically all the contributors in this thread! :D

Just finished upgrading the CPU of my new EX490 to E6300; was sailing on uncharted waters (that #00 philips sure is needed), but so far everything looks fine. Idle temp is 40C with 1+2+2TB HD-s installed; might drop a few degrees lower after the curing/burn in process. Fans are hovering around 1230RPM.

I think of my server as being an "ex496" right now; might make a "497" out of it by upgrading the memory to 4GB, as soon as the benefits become just as well established as with the processor upgrade...

:sanjuan:

Next step is to start loading stuff onto it and discover how and what can I to share over my network; then, to set up my TR5M for file duplication. I am planning to use that box as my offsite storage...

Welcome to the forums.

Congrats on your purchase and upgrade of processor. The processor upgrade is a big performance enhancement. The upgrade to the 4gb of RAM is a cost versus benefits gained issue, as with the current version of WHS you'll only make use of ~3 gb of that RAM, and most find that 2 GB is more than enough. But, it really depends on what you're doing with the box and your specific needs on memory. I suspect if the price of a 4 gb stick of RAM was the same as a 2 GB stick, we would see many users upgrade.

Very interesting thread! I noticed one thing isn't really discussed (yet), how does all this upgrading influence read & write speed?

The CPU speed really shouldn't have an effect on disk speeds that I've seen. I get the same read/write throughput on my EX495 that I got on my previous (much slower) EX485.

The advantage of a faster cpu is for other server tasks, such as video encoding, media streaming, etc.

Not so, if you look on page 6 post 2 you will see that WHS recognizes 4GB, the performance gains are substantial. Is anyone else going to chime in that has done the 4GB upgrade too?

While WHS "recognizes" 4gb of RAM, WHS as as a 32-bit OS cannot use all 4gb. It tends to make use of around a little over 3gb depending on some factors. So, the effective gain in memory is a little over 1gb. While there is no doubt there is some performance gain IF your system demands exceed 2gb, you have to decide whether the cost of the 4gb stick is worth that gain. For most users, the cost outweighs the benefit since most users' demands do not exceed the 2 gb in the MSS.

Not fully correct. WHS was designed a bit differently and can use a max of 4GB. From the website:

Physical Memory Limits: Windows Home Server
Windows Home Server is available only in a 32-bit edition. The physical memory limit is 4 GB.

Here again I must state I definitely noticed the whole machine was much quicker in just about everything. From loading the console, to logging in to remote, to checking the event viewer. Now decoding anything that was more dependent on the CPU and write speed of the drives. But overall use of the OS was faster. I had the 2GB with the E8500 for about a week and then added the 4GB and it was definitely quicker to load anything.

I do hope they decide to move on with this and make a 2008R2 so we could really see the benefits of 64bit and dual channel memory.

Where did you buy the RAM?
