Ok, I am confused on the processor upgrade. I have a 490, but I eventually want to use it for media streaming, etc. Right now I use it for backups, storage of family pics, etc.

What is the way to go to upgrade the processor? I have seen e7500, e6300,etc......what is the most stable and safe thing to do for this?

I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to figure out which processor I want to get. I was only doing backups and file access. Well I just installed PlayOn streaming software last night, and set it up to stream to a Wii. Streaming Hulu maxes out my Celeron CPU 100%. I eventually want to stream to 2 media devices. I definitely need a CPU upgrade now.

Well received my EX490 from amazon yesterday, thanks to HP mucking me about. But thats another story.

I have fired it up and with the stock celeron i would compare it to the ex475 with a 1640 fitted. (What im upgrading from btw)

I have just ordered an E6300 from dabs, should be here tomorrow. Will report back as to how i get on with the upgrade.

:)

I bought an E5200 for $40 online at a black Friday sale. Got it yesterday, but wife is making me wait to unwrap it on Christmas. I think the 490 will me MUCH nicer with a faster proc, especially for streaming and video conversion. Hmmm... now how to swap it early and stick the celeron proc in that shipping box without the wife knowing....

Ha ha Mike,

Yeah know the feeling. My wife has got me an additional 2 x 1.5tb drives to put in. The problem is she wont let me even just use one of them now to restore the os onto. So when i get the drives i will have to do a rebuild :(

Finally got a little time today and put in the E8200, sweeeeet! Much snappier page loads and logins, and my Squeezebox Server is pretty much instantaneous now with over 10,000 FLACs. I'll try some transcoding next, but so far definitely money and time well spent. Fan speeds at idle are same as before at ~1230RPM, CPU at idle actually dropped a few degrees from 36C to 34C. Also cleaned and regreased the Northbridge chip with Arctic Silver 5 when installing the CPU, so we should be chillin'....

Very odd. I upgraded to an e6300 with my EX490 and no matter what I try or how many times I regrease with Artic Silver 5 (very small amount) I can't seem to get the idle temp below 43c.

What is weird is that even when I power it on for the first time in a while, in a cold room, it still comes on and say 43!!! What gives.

All CPU's are not created equal, some run hot and some don't even within the same processor family. Also, ambient temperature plays a large role in processor temps. 43C is not that bad, That's what my E6750 runs at in a desktop machine. Does it peak quickly? I run at 43C idle but at 100% only runs at 56C maybe 58C. Did you run Orthos on the machine to stress test it? You'll find alot about the processor and machine once you stress it.

Probably a bad temperature sensor... Not a big deal, but you could try exchanging your CPU if it bothers you.

I think at 100% it peake at 61 or 62%, which is probably why I haven't been too concerned about it. Guess i'll kieep it. It's been over a month almost. Works like a charm so oh well. Just wanted to get a second options. Thanks guys.

I would think the temperature sensor is OK and it is the chip variance and the ambient conditions...

I just dropped in a E8200 into my EX490 and regreased it with AS5.

The initial temps for the CPU is idle around 67 from the console readings. Is this the top of the range or should I yank this chip out?

Room Temp right now is 65f - 70f range I think. Very cool room since I have the heat turned off here.

What other programs should I be using to get a read?

If you're saying that your idle temp is at 67C, that seems more than just a little high  ....
