Ok, so the 490 is in.

Reading the posts... I see the 6300 is a fine replacement for the celeron.
But, all these people having good luck with the 8200 and 8400 makes me think go big or go home.

In reality, is there a huge performance gain from the extra expenditure?
I can score a 6300 for 69 bucks, as opposed to an 8200 for 120.
Is doubling the price worth it??

well, i couldn't wait for a reply.
I am impatient.

Anyway, decided the 50+ extra wasn't worth it and decided on the 6300.
The instant graitification helped as I can pick it up locally.

Dropped in the E6600 and loving it already. Easy job to perform.

My 490 is on the way. Also think about the CPU and Memory upgrade. Have question about the DDR2. Found the following:

Samsung 4GB 800MHz CL6 240PIN 258X8 Samsung Original (MDD2-4G800SO)

Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL6 DIMM (KVR800D2N6/4G)

Samsung is almost half price of the Kingston. They are both non-ECCs. Is the Samsung can be used instead of the Kingston?

Thanks in advance.

Well,

Per my previous post, I bit the bullet and got the 6300, but it turns out to be the C2D 1.67GHZ E6300 vs the 2.6 GHZ PDC.
So I cancelled the order, and as luck would have it found an E8200 sitting in an unused desktop at work.

How convenient.

So I acquired said desktop CPU, and brought it home.
Seemed to be working alright, but never got the OS to load.
Just sat blinking at me.
Thought, hmm dead proc perhaps, but I just yanked it from a working machine.

Decided before ripping it apart again to see if I can get a system restore going.
Restore chugging along.

So it says to me the OS tanked at the addition of the C2D instead of picking up the change.

Anyone else have this issue when popping in any C2D or E8200/E8400??

I agree with you, unless the server is running low on available memory (the example is not) then faster RAM will make more of a difference than more RAM.

Aren't we forgetting that "unused" RAM is used for caching? And the more the merrier? Server 2003 was OK at caching, but Server 2008 is much better so I expect even greater performance from more RAM with Vail.

To me RAM speed would be secondary - I doubt it would show a meaningful impact even in media transcoading (the most task intensive thing WHS does). And even if it did shave of a few seconds here and there, for overall performance I would expect far more from adding more total RAM capacity.

That's the only thing I don't like about the HP units - only one RAM slot, and probably why I will wait until the next version of WHS is released to see if they release new hardware with at least two RAM slots.

While WHS "recognizes" 4gb of RAM, WHS as as a 32-bit OS cannot use all 4gb. It tends to make use of around a little over 3gb depending on some factors.

While I haven't verified it with WHS, WHS is based on server 2003 and the standard edition of server 2003 can use a full 4 GB of RAM (I know because I admin'd sever Server 2003 boxes) and some editions of 32bit Windows server can utilize up to 128GB of RAM:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778(VS.85).aspx

This isn't Windows XP :-)

And it all becomes moot with the next version of WHS which is based on 64bit Server 2008.

Sing everyone: "You can never have too much RAM"

Eric, do you have a Windows Home Server? Have you seen the screenshots of what Windows reports when 4GB of memory is installed? Even with PAE you're still limited to a 32-bit address space with provides at the most 4GB of memory to a process.

I upgraded my EX490 server today using the Intel E7500 CPU and 4 GB Mushkin Silverline DDR2 RAM. As indicated by EricE, the system seems to be able to use the entire RAM since the Server 2003 base can address the full amount of RAM. So far the upgrade has been working great.

I didn't at the time I wrote my message - thanks to jumran for verifying that it does indeed see all 4GB. Windows Server is a different beast than the desktop OS's, and confusion over memory is common - I deal with it constantly. Thankfully the aggressive moves by MS to 64bit OSs is resolving this confusion by default.

I just got an EX490 the week before last (awesome sale price from our friends at newegg). I haven't upgraded the CPU or RAM as I was going to donate it to my church to back up their workstations - no need to upgrade if that's all its going to be used for. I set it up at home, played around with the home media features and was duly impressed. Started doing some reading, found out about the Tivo module, mControl and some others and started to think this could be a fun box - alas, I took it over to my church, finished setting it up and got all the workstations configured. 10 windows PCs and one Mac fully backed up in a little under two hours - nice!

Then last week I noticed newegg had a killer deal on the StorageWorks X310 ($350 - you'd almost be crazy to not get one!) - so I bought that, it arrives Tuesday. That will go to the church, the EX490 will come back home to me \:D/

So, I probably will upgrade the little 'ol EX490 after all, seeing how I have visions of downloading shows from my Tivo and transcoding them for my iPad.

Does anyone know if the EX490 will go higher than 4GB? I'm thinking about the upcoming Vail release. I wouldn't expect it to, but I haven't looked at it in any detail to see and you never know...

Buy a ex490 and upgrade to the e5200 - sounds simple enough - but I have a question that I would like answered. As many of the members have stated that their upgrades to a variety of Intel CPU's over the stock Cel unit was successful yet no one has mentioned that the SLEEP and SHUTDOWN work.
And I was wondering if anyone has validated that the Shutdown and Sleep functions of the unit still work, This is a know issue in the HP485 when you did the upgrade to another CPU that was not the e5200 s the SPEC code of SLAY7 w the stepping of M0. And would require some BIOS edits or your bricked you mother board etc. As the HP bios is different between the 49X vs the 48X units - not by much but enough.
How to test this -IMHO- the best way is though the Remote desktop function and using the START tab to do a shutdown and the Admin applet to do a SLEEP NOW - this is of course from my 48X experience and the 49X could be different in version 3.0:
We should also know what version of the OS you using the 2.5 vs the 3.0 w patch. SO again please post your results the model of the cpu, the spec # of the CPU - if you have the Intel box the spec # is on the side w the ID label. And the OS version.

Here is a website I use to help w ID'ing CPUs - http://www.cpu-world.com
this provides spec # w Intel cpu part numbers - Boxed or tray version of the processor - and their Stepping #'s
Thanks to all for any help w this question.

I use VNC to more remote management, and I can shutdown my upgrade 490 with no problem. I can also wake the unit up via wake on lan as well after configuring the unit to sleep at night (1am-7am).

Is this what you wanted to verfiy, or have I not understood your question/point?

Hey everyone,

Back on page 6 there was some interesting conversation on RAM speeds that dropped off into nowhereland and I am hoping that some of you that have completed an upgrade can comment.

I am interested in those that have increased the capability of their systems with a 1066 MT/s FSB capable processor and equivalent 1.8V RAM. When you finished the upgrade, does the MSS report that it is clocking at the correct frequency (533MHz) with the automatic setting still selected? Did any of you have to fiddle with the BIOS settings to get the RAM frequency to scale correctly? Amount of RAM (2GB/4GB) doesn't really matter for this accessment ... I just want to know how the MSS responds to the faster chipsets being available.

Thanks

I have a 490 that I upgraded with 4GB PC6400 RAM and a Q8400S CPU.

Pc Wizard 2010 reports that my FSB is 333/1333MHz. My CPI speed is 2666, but runs mostly at 1995 with speedstep @ 1.1V

My memory speed is 400MHz @1.8V

Although I do have the vga/ps2 cable (v2) I did not have to change any settings in the Bios.

Hey thanks for the update. Your RAM is being underclocked ... while that's ok, I would look into that to maximize that quad core powerhouse :P.

Anyone running DDR2-8500?
