Update on the e6700 install.

The install was a non-event to say the least! Can't believe how much goop was on the CPU! Gonna take me a while to clean off the celery chip.

Anyway, the 6700 was picked right up, of course after the first boot I had to reboot again to get both cores to show. It is running fine but here are some things of note.

1. HOT! I'm not sure if the HP software is reading the temps right as it was showing 75c at idle. I installed speedfan and that it showing a different number or 57c. Seems to be cooling down a bit after some run time but not sure if this is good...

2. with the bios reading such a high temp the fans are going nuts! they made it all the way up to over 3,000 rpm! Server went from pin-drop quiet to hoover vacuum!

Based on the above, I need to figure out what temps are correct first. Second, if it doesn't settle in I will remove the e6700 and replace it with a e6300 and call it a day. Those of you running the e6300, are the fans staying in check???

If I have missed something please let me know!!! :sanjuan:

The fans in my E6300 EX490 are at 1230-1240 rpm with CPU temperature at 35 C. The fans in the stock EX490 sitting next to it are at 1260-1270 rpm with CPU temperature at 37 C.

So, I wonder if the BIOS is having a hard time reading the older 65nm chips such as this e6700.

You are right, with the stock chip in the fans were at 1200 rpm.

I am going to pull the server apart again and check the paste I applied and make sure it is good coverage. I don't think this is the issue though and may just go with the other chip...

I am streaming HULU to my NMT right now and the temps from speedfan are showing 69c per core and fans are running at 2,800 rpm right now.

As I've predicted since E6700 is a 65nm CPU, it will run hot... Rule of thumb is to stay away from the 65nm, go with 45nm one for C2D like E7400, but if want want the cache of 6MB, can try E8400 first.

Yup, your were right! LOL...

I was really hoping the idle temps would be in the mid to low 40's but that was not going to happen.

I'm back with the celery chip and now running cooler than before till I can get my hands on a e6300. Maybe I might have to head to Fry's tomorrow and pick one up, only a couple $ more than at NewEgg and at least I don't have to wait till mid next week to get it.

Interesting though, Speedfan is showing my celery running 15c hotter than the HP software is indicating. Is there a better program available to show CPU temps on the MSS?

I use Core Temp and it shows temperatures exactly the same as HP control panel (whether it's a good thing or not :D ).

Thanks Akgem, I downloaded it and it showed a big discrepancy also, I had to tell it to out put -16c to correlate with the HP system monitor.

hopefully when I'm out on the road tomorrow I can pick up a new chip! If not I will just order one and deal with it next week.

I appreciate all your help guys!

Hi Guys,

I ask the question again.
Does somebody noticed the option Intel Virtualization in the BIOS of the ex 490?
I would like to change the CPU to the e6300 and use virtualization on it...

I do not see any options in the BIOS to enable virtualization. I also tried to run the havdetectiontool.exe but it won't run on WHS.

Is there any chance to get this feature by an BIOS Update?

Ok, went up to Fry's this morning to get a new chip and was thinking I would get the e6300 but walked out with a little more horsepower! Slapped a e7500 in and WOW :sanjuan:

Temps are good, around 35c at idle and at 100% temps max at around 62c. Once core is reading lower than the other so I'm not sure what that is about (about 6c lower) but this baby is purring! Fan speed is low around 1240 rpm and 1350 at 100%.

At this point the CPU is doing what I wanted it to do. Run dual streams from Netflix and Hulu through my PlayOn server. This works without hickup and actually noticed the SpeedStep was kicking in when ever it could.

Thanks for all your help guys!

This was the way to go, get the ex490 and upgrade!

ex490 = $445 (newegg last week)
1.5tb WDGreen = $109
Bill me later coupon = -$100
e7500 = $120
total = $574!

If I'm not suppose to post pricing I apologize!!!

The stock heatsink worked with the E7500? That's interesting if true.

Seems to be working just fine and my temps are staying below 62c when full tilt with idle temps in the mid to low 30's.

I can not answer that question as I don't have a way to measure it but I am sure it is as the Celeron 450 is a 35w chip and the e7500 is 65w.

Celeron 450 info: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=35239
e7500 info: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=36503

Either way, it is a lot less power than I was running on my PC that was always up as a file server and crunching my media files to serve to my media devices.
