Hi, First time poster, longtime reader.

I am considering buying the new EX490 and would like to know if After my warranty expires would it be possible to upgrade to the e5200 by simply replacing the CPU?

Cheers

I've not heard of anyone trying it, but HP told me the motherboard and BIOS are the same in both models and so this should work fine.

That's a good idea, and something I hadn't thought about. I'm in the market for a new EX495, but now you got me thinking.

Let's see, the price difference between the EX490 and EX495 is $150. You can get the E5200 for $68 from NewEgg, and maybe even less if you shop around (or you can step up to E6300 for extra $15 or E6500 for extra $25). So in the end, you're saving around $85 give or take. You do get a smaller hard drive with EX490, but I'll be replacing the stock drives anyways, so it's a non issue. Are there any other differences between the EX490 and EX495 that I'm forgetting? Anyone else decided to go that route instead of just getting a stock EX495?

The only other difference is the size of the system drive, 1.0TB vs 1.5TB.

ok great so it should work in theory. I heard somewhere that the heatsink might be different between the two models. I'll post back If i can confirm this.

Please do. NewEgg has a $5 off code for E6300 bringing it down to $78, so I'm really tempted to order it. Unfortunately, CPUs are non-returnable, so it's a gamble.

Alex Kuretz's review of the ex490/ex495 says:

"The motherboards and BIOS are the same between the EX490 and EX495. Obviously they have different processors and heat sinks, and the BIOS can sense the different processors and use a new and improved fan control / cooling system to cool the processors."

I guess we will have to wait for anyone with Picsof an EX490 to compare to Alex's screenshots.

His review can be found here:

Were getting closer!

Yeah I haven't seen the different heatsinks, I'm also interested to see a picture. I'm not sure how it could be much different, even the one in the EX48x is similar to the EX495.

Just thinking outloud here...

Even if the heatsinks are somehow different on EX490 and EX495, I can't really think of a reason why the EX490 heatsink wouldn't work with E5200/E6300/E6500 processors. I doubt the EX490 heatsink is molded specifically for the Celeron chip. Most of the chips have a similar flat-top profile, so do the most heatsinks (the heatsink in my EX470 is flat). So, I highly doubt the EX490 heatsink couldn't be mated to the E5200 chip. Now, the "grill" could be different on the EX495 heatsink to allow for better cooling of the E5200 chip if it runs much hotter than Celeron chip, which I don't know if it does, and Google hasn't turned anythnig up yet. Does anyone know the operating temperatures of Celeron vs. E5200 chips?

Akgem your right. The physical aspect should not be a factor. I was refering to the Thermal envelope of the heatsink.

The bios might also not allow for anything over the e5200.

While I understand from Alex's review that the heatsink in the 495 is beefier than the 485 and 470 series, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that HP is using that beefier heatsink in both the 490 and 495. It would make sense to do that from am ease of manufacturing standpoint and requisition of parts for manufacturing.

I found a good deal on an EX490 on eBay today, so I decided to roll the dice. I will try putting the E6300 in it and see if it works. Also picked up two Samsung F2EG 1.5Tb drives for $80 each at Fry's today at lunch, so it's been a good day so far. :D

so has anyone gutted a 490 yet to see if there is a heatsink difference between the celeron and e5200?

im interested in adding another server to the family and trying to see if the 85 dollar savings is going to work, or is the heatsink difference enough to warrant the extra 150

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the EX490 on ebay?

$425 + $25 shipping, less 8% Bing cashback (~$34).
