Does anyone with a ex490 or ex495 that uses the sleep function have it working properly where it consistently sleeps every time it's supposed to. Or does it just do it one time and that's it?

Is there a way to determine after the fact that the server has (or has not) slept? I'm asleep myself when mine is scheduled, and looking through the various logs at the scheduled time didn't really seem to indicate much one way or another (i.e. nothing explicitly saying "The system is going to sleep now" or such).

I just enabled sleep a couple of days ago. Mine seemed to behave as expected last night. I have it set to sleep from 11PM to 5AM, and I rescheduled the backups and virus scans to run outside that time period. Those activities will wake it and it will not go back into sleep mode once it has been woken up.

Look for an Information entry from the PowerController in the Application log in the Event Viewer (Start->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer).

I had mine set to sleep 11PM to 5Am with no scheduled activity during that time period.
All back ups and music syncs were set for after 6AM
Seemed to sleep the first few days then I noticed it was on during this period.

I changed the schedule from midnight to 5AM and she slept last night.
I set it back to 11Pm and will see if she goes out tonight

You probably want it to go to sleep AFTER midnight as there is, as I understand from other threads on this subject, a maintenance task that runs at midnight.

How to tell if you Sleep Cycle is functioning correctly:

Aside from physically observing your MSS for a Sleep Cycle, you'll need to look at the Application Log for a PowerController Entry that corresponds to the sleep time. You will almost certainly see one the first cycle when you initially set up a sleep time and for the first cycle after you CHANGE a sleep time. The key is to look for two consecutive sleep cycles where you made NO changes. For instance if you initally set the sleep time to 12:00a.m. and the next day reset it to 11:00 PM, then those are not consecutive. On the other hand if you set it for 12 a.m. and you get two nights in a row where the server does sleep (as evidenced by a Application Log entry for a PowerController event at 12:00 a.m.), then those are considered consecutive and you can probably say the Sleep feature is working properly.

I haven't seen anyone post that their 490/5 sleeps consistently. If someone here does have a unit that sleeps every night can you post and let us know.

Mine failed that test last night. I installed Lights Out this morning and we'll see if it works. The server did not go to sleep at 11PM as scheduled.

Good to hear. Unfortunately, there are several of us that can't get this to work regardless of what we set it to.

Guys, I have exactly the same problem with my HP X510. It's driving me nuts trying to find out what the problem is. I really want my server to sleep automatically each night but it flatly refuses after it has done it for one cycle.

I have tried various things but this is a definite bug that needs resolving. Anyone found a solution yet?

Define identical, please. I've noticed some very odd behavior with my EX495 with regards to the Sleep program. I have my server set to go to sleep at 11:00 p.m. and to wake up at 5:00 a.m. I usually hit the rack about 10:00 p.m., so I assume it goes to sleep. I wake up at 5:00 a.m. and when I check on the MSS it is on. However, the MSS seems to have some sort of amnesia when it comes to. None of the PCs can connect to it nor can you RDP into it - it is almost as though it forgets who it is. Oddly enough you can ping it via the static IP address. A power button cycle will restart it and all is well afterwards. Now after this morning's power cycle, I tried manually putting it to sleep and that worked fine. Then I sent a "Wake Server' command from a PC and it came right back. Not sure what to make of it. :?

I have the same exact problem with my ex485! Before it automatically goes to sleep the remote desktop works fine as well as using the mediasmart software to connect to it. But when it goes to sleep at a set scheduled time and wakes up again the remote desktop and any sort of connection do not work. The only thing that works is if you http into the server itself using your homeserver.com address. The only way that I know of to fix this problem is to do a shut down and turn itback on. I have not tried to do a restart but that may work as well. It is a very annoying bug and I somehow don't know how either microsoft or HP missed it. I'm assuming this is something HP built??
But it's comforting to know that there isn't anything wrong with my mediasmart server!
