On the marketing materials by HP, the "capacity expandable up to 17TB"...

The way I see it -

MSS - 4 drives
eSATA - 5 drives
USB 2.0 - 4 drives

Total - 13 drives
2TB in each doesn't that mean it is expandable to 26TB or am I missing something?

You're missing the fact that you can attach 8 bay USB enclosures to the USB ports. You can attach at least up to 32 drives to the MSS. I belive that 32 drives is a limit of drive extender. So, in theory, you can have ~64 TB of storage.

I don't know why they put those numbers on there, especially with no explanation. There's a (6) reference mark in the release, but their footnotes only go to (4). :D

The esata port multiplier is capped at 5 drives. The Sans Digital 8 bay enclosure requires 2 esata connections, (4 drives each).

I know it is slightly off topic but, can the ex485 also have 8 bay USB enclosures? and if so, is there a particular one which would be recommended?

I would. WHS relies on JBOD. :-k

You can add them one at a time. Best from the bottom up. BTW, there's a "Search" button at the top right and a Wiki link at the top left. Get to know them. They are your friends.
