I replaced the battery and cleaned fan etc. Video helped. No issues and straight forward. Battery must have been an issue because now it shows up in network every time!

Still having trouble accessing the server though... I will repeat steps above now that I have a new battery. Should work and stay working this time.

Hurray.
Progress.
If the battery was dead when you boot the server defaults to I think jan1 1990 as I recall

So, I've performed a recovery twice now and it seems to take. The server lights are all doing what they should (solid aqua) as well as the drive lights.

I can't seem to login using the password I set up. Then, after a reboot, the Windows Home Server Console can't find the server. I also no longer see the server in the Network settings.

I can go through the recovery and software setup again...but both times, when I was able to see the server on the network, I couldn't log in. Then, both times, after a reboot, I could no longer see the server on the network.

Does this have to do with the clock? I assumed the recovery would fix that, but perhaps not...?

Oddly, about 30 minutes after rebooting everything, I suddenly started getting notifications from the server. I was able to log in and can see the WHS clock is set for the correct time and date, as well as time zone and daylight savings. So does this mean the BIOS clock doesn't need reset? or is reset? I am afraid this problem will just repeat itself...

Oh well. The console hung, I can't log in, and remote desktop doesn't work. I've spent more time on this than this machine is worth! Time to upgrade to a real server that actually works for my office, I guess. It was a pretty good 10 years. POS.

If you are going to give up the ghost.
Take a look at readynas.
For client backups I use easeus todo backup.
It also creates a pxe boot disk for each pc.
