IS there a way to update the video drivers on the HP EX490s to a point where I can at least enable aero and possibly watch videos? I have installed Windows Media Center on WHS 2011 and my HP EX490 but I can't test everything because I believe Windows is reporting insufficient video memory. I have upgraded to a quad core CPU and 4 gigs of ram but I cant see anyway to throw a graphics card in this thing, which is why I am hoping for better video support from a different driver. Thanks.

what good would a upgraded video driver do in a ex490.
It does not display anything except for the console and RDC.
It is not designed to display HD graphics.
You need to move WMC outside of the server to a pc or use like a xbox.
Or use a media player that will play back the files stored on the server.

All it can do is supply the file to another device to display like streaming.
Now the question comes is what resolution did you save your media files.
If it was a HD resolution then the playback device is at fault.
I don't think you can find a cpu the has HD graphics to use in the server, which is what is needed, not a video driver.

Windows media center will not playback bluray files period.
And you need to edit the registry to enable the library.
At least the last time I tried it.

I don't know where you are trying to playback the videos on but I have had great success with using a rasberry PI using OSMC.
Which has Kodi.
It works extremely well and it can be done for around $80.00 per tv
For a pc just install

I was planning to use it as a "Server" for media center extenders. This way, I could have all of my applications that need to run 24/7 on the media smart. Others have been successful using different hardware but I didn't have much luck getting extenders to connect or playing video natively. I still might try this but use VMWare as a service instead. I haven't decided weather its worth it or not yet.

Been there done that with WMC.
WMC sucks unless you use xbox and I mean the old model. and tweak the registry in windows then it still will not play a lot of file formats.
Most all the other 3rd party WMC extenders are not available anymore.

I have a large media library.
500 movies
10,000 images
and well over a thousand music cd's
many music videos and mp3's.

Try what I said
Just use the server to store the media files no media server enabled .
You will never be happy with streaming from wmc or twonky, plex, etc.
Then purchase a rasberry PI 3 with case and power supply and heat sink cost is like 80 bucks. One per tv
Then you need a micro sd card super fast 8GB to 16GB max but 8 is plenty even for me.
Download and install OSMC for free to install on the card.
It has KODI which used to be called xbmc.
Oh you will need a hdmi cable to connect to the tv.
Plus either a good wireless or wired internet connection at each rasberry.

I have tried dune, popcorn players and most all the media servers wmc, twonky, plex

Kodi works the best.
It will run on a pc or on a rasberry PI
It will play almost any file format.

Lots of reading at
Rasberry PI

You can get kits with several configurations off of amazon

If you need any help.
I can pick a kit out for you.

I tried kodi but couldn't get used to it. I still like WMC, and my family is used to it. For streaming we all watch TV, youtube, netflix, etc. from either WMC or a mix of WMC/Kodi (For streaming I have to fold and admit that kodi is better for the time being). Right now, I do use the Media smart as a file server, only I use the connector app on WHS 2011 to populate the libraries in WMC. I rarely have problems watching MKV bluray rips, or WTV recorded TV files, and I just signed up for HBO, starz, etc from my cable company. I have honestly been happier with WMC than any other solution. Just so you can have some idea about how nuts I am about the WMC ecosystem, I also have 2 HP extenders which aren't currently in use, one is brand new and still in the box. I have an xbox 360 in my livingroom that is ran off of the same switch as a NUC running WMC, and I don't have any performance issues. For newer devices, I use Emby which from what I gather is much more stable than plex, and has a wmc addon (I have been using emby for about a year or so, and really like it). Emby even lets me watch live TV via a web browser so it checks the box for viewing movies, TV, etc. on mobile devices. I wanted to try to complete the setup, and run WMC natively on a media smart but I don't NEED to do this. I suppose my next attempt will involve installing virtualbox as a service, and setting up 7MC in that for extenders but this will also be something I do as an experiment. Thank you for your input though, and I'm glad someone is still looking out for MediaSmart owners. I can appreciate some aspects of kodi but I just enjoy WMC more, and until I absolutely have to I won't be moving to anything else. I have tried in the past but come back to WMC every time.

If it works for you.
That is what you want.
Myself I burn true 1:1 copies of all movies as video.ts or blue-ray as iso.
That way I don't loose resolution and I can copy them directly to a blank dvd if needed.
Because I don't stream them. I play them directly just like it is the original disc.
They don't play well on a wmc network.
