Post subject:  EX490 Power Supply Died?

Box has ran well since the day I bought it, other than a while back I couldn't log into the server console. Tried reinstalling connector to no avail. Today I backed up everything to a USB drive and was going to do a factory restore. Got everything set up and connected properly, loaded the restore disc. Powered down the server, won't power back up. Power light comes on just for a second, the fans just start to spin up, then it goes out. Has my PS bit the dust? Any way to verify? I'm hardware savvy, upgraded my CPU and memory when I first bought it and have built and repaired computers for literally decades. I'm thinking I just have to pull the PS out, jumper the switch connection and check voltages, but not sure of the connector pinout. TIA for any help.

Assuming the server is not full of dust bunnies and it is shutting down from heat. The power supplies are a weak link, I have replaced two.
They are pinned different then a normal power supply. I would guess that is your problem.

Good Luck
Most users have bought replacements on ebay, but you have to be careful to get one that is pinned correct and get one that doesn't have all the extra wires/plugs.

Has anyone tried these dudes? http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/270-wat ... Supply.php

Just wondering if they have the correct pin-out off the hop. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.

Look at the (Connectors Included) I would shoot them a email or call as there is now room to stuff all those extra connectors even if it is pinned right, which I doubt. But might be worth a call.
Let us know if you find out otherwise.
I would guess No.
Good Luck

Here is the text of their e-mail response and my original query.

What do you guys think? Worth a try?

Yes if you have any of the EX series this will be a perfect slide in
match, you must use the MS adaptor to your mother board, this ps will come
with that.

FSP270-60LE-MS - $99.99
This 270 watt power supply was designed to replace HP MediaSmart EX470,
EX475, EX480, EX485, EX487, EX490, EX495, series power supplies that use a
variation of Hipro HP-U200EF3 power supplies. This power supply is very
similar to most flex atx power supplies in physical dimensions. As a
matter of fact many people have made the mistake of trying to make a flex
atx power supply work inside a MediaSmart server. The fact is that the
EXxxx series servers use a power supply that has different electrical
flow. This configuation must be matched up accurately for the power supply
to work properly. This power supply for HP MediaSmart servers that we
offer does exactly that!

1) They did not address "does it only have one plug?
2) I bought a power supply that had a "you must use the MS adaptor to your mother board" and I barely had room to fit it all in there. It is a short cable that changes the pinning to be correct.

It might work, but I would look for a better one even if it costs a little more, if that is all you can find, just know it will require some wire looping to get it to fit, That's if it has only one connector.
If it has all the other connectors, there won't be enough room for them.

Good luck, let us know which way you went....

Do you know of a source, where I could buy one, ready to install?

I did a quick ebay check:
if I was going to buy one it would be this one, notice the second picture with the "one" plug.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-350W-HP-MediaSmart-Server-EX470-475-480-485-487-490-495-Power-Supply-Replace-/330800575511?hash=item4d05403417:g:n3AAAOxy2d9SU2r5

Good luck there may be others, but the price on that one is pretty good, I paid $80-$90 for mine years ago.

P.S. I have purchased one from these people when they first started, they had a adapter to correct the pinning and it just did fit, but at least it only had one plug. I believe they have done away with the adapter and just re-pin them now.

Thank You, received my new PSU, it fit perfectly in the machine, no adapter included, just the correct molex. I followed the instructions on YouTube for replacing RAM to take apart the server and it went perfectly.
Thank you to the community and to you for the help. Back up and running, data saved who could ask for anything more. :sanjuan:

Awesome! Glad to hear you got what you needed and were able to get your server back up and running.
Even better, now you have a backup (outside the server) which is always a good thing.
I use a second server with no clients connected to it and Synctoy to backup the main server shares.
Then I have (2) 2tb red drives That I plug in non-pooled and backup the shares on a rotational basis and keep one of them off site. Very much over kill, but I have been collecting data for over 30 years.

I assume you have Smart addin to keep an eye on your drives?

Good luck and enjoy, I am still running WHS v1 and will as long as I can.

Just to make sure I'm reading this right, the one in the quoted link from ebay by Gardian, is that the one you purchased?
