I tried searching for this without success. I have finally reached a capacity limit with my ex490 and the attached Sans digital 5 bay enclosure. I would like to add another enclosure. Is there a way to do this ?

Unfortunately no. Well, sort of. You cannot add any more storage to the EX490 with SATA speeds. The EX490 server has four USB 2.0 ports, three in the back and one in the front. You could add additional multi-bay enclosures via USB, but things will run at USB 2.0 speeds on those enclosures.

If your goal is just extra raw storage, you should be fine with USB 2.0 speed. If your goal is concurrent streaming of high definition content, you probably won't be happy with USB 2.0's performance.

Also some of the enclosures today have like 8 bays and support usb3 and still a single esata connection and support sataIII(6gb).
If you are still using whsv1 you are still limited to 2TB pool drives even though the enclosures support larger drives now.
So in the future if you leave whsv1 behind you get the benefit of the faster speed with a new os.

In my case I opted the other way I still use the whsv1 but now it is a basically a backup device and I have my media installed in a htpc with windows 10.
