Last month I acquired another HP MediaSmart Server, an EX495. This joins my EX487 and EX490. My original two servers I upgraded to 4GB each. According to Newegg, I bought 2 x 4GB DDR2 DIMMs back in 2011, and spent about $90 total.

Newegg sells that same Patriot DIMM, except it's now about four times more expensive!

I trolled the waters of eBay, but it's quite rare to find a single 1x4GB DDDR 2 DIMM for desktops. Even if you try refining your search to weed out the 2 x 2GB sticks, you still get way more 2x2 hits, rather than 1x4. And the vast majority of the 1x4GB DIMMs I found on eBay were dirt cheap with the disclaimer "for AMD motherboards only." I googled that and the general consensus is that these "for AMD only" DIMMs are cheap for a reason...poor quality. I'd never heard of AMD-only memory before.

So back to Newegg and Amazon I went. I can't see to touch a 1x4GB DIMM (DDR2-PC2 5300 or 6400) for under $90 new. I bid on the scant few on eBay, but the DIMMs went for well north of $60, way more than I was willing to pay for a used DIMM, especially considering just a few years ago I paid $44.99 new. Why would I pay $60 for used?

Then by a stroke of luck I found a new one for $40 on Amazon, so I ordered it. It arrived today, and then I realized I overlooked something in the item description. It's registered memory designed for enterprise servers.

Interestingly, 1x4 GB server memory, whether buffered, registered and/or ECC is pretty cheap. But consumer desktop memory is sky high in price.

Does anyone know where I can get a single 1 x 4GB DDR2 DIMM for a fair price?

Also found this.

There are bad reviews about Komputerbay memory but I used the previous ram that I posted on my server and its doing fine.

Thanks, I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet. It just seems so high for a chip, especially when non-desktop DDR2 4GB chips are so much cheaper. ECC, buffered, registered DDR2 4GB sticks range from $25-45, and AMD only is even less than that. But 4GB DDR2 desktop memory is sky high. $84 seems like a ripoff, but they must be really rare and it's just supply and demand at this point. Probably not a whole lot of them being made. :(

Nailed it with this one.

The DDR2 plattform was mostly 32 bit. People heading for 64bit systems went with newer tech, and got DDR3. So the manufacturers used the higher density DDR2 chips for mobile devices, and server applications.
Sadly, i would say, since i'd like to be able to reasonably cheaply, equip a AMD DDR2 platform with 4x4GB ECC memory, but it takes unregistered RAM, so that to ain't happening...

Anyone know of any issues with going with one of these?

Someone is selling the pair locally for as much as a single 4GB module is online, new.

My off-the-cuff impression is these would work. They're unbuffered, non-ECC. I've got Patriot memory in my EX487 and EX490 now. I'd love to put a 4GB stick in my EX495, but I don't want to pay the mint the online vendors are charging.

If the 8GB kit is made out of the same 4GB memory that's in my EX490 then I say go for it. I upgraded my system 2 years ago and have had no RAM issues.

Thanks, unfortunately he sold them to someone else. His original asking price was too high for me to spend on an OLD pc.
