After week or so I finally succeeded with Win 8.1 pro install with NO VGA cable on EX495.
I had to see several forums to put the pieces together so here is what worked:

- Make bootable Win 8.1 USB stick from ISO image of DVD by using Win 7 USB/DVD downlaod tool http://wudt.codeplex.com/
- Prepare Autounattend.xml using Windows ADK (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=30652)
- In the above step make sure remote desktop is enabled
- copy Autounattend.xml to the root of the bootbale USB stick
- Put clean HDD with all partitions removed into a different PC that has VGA and monitor
- Boot from USB and make sure the Autounattend works for you (I had to try and fix it few times before it installed with no questions)
- Once it works clean up the HDD again and reboot from USB again
- Shot off the PC during the first reboot (Installer copies the files and installs and reboots)
- Move that HDD into EX495 bottom bay and reboot
- Should finish the install on EX495 and show up on the network

Hope it helps!

Hi Timur002 or Cirrus,

Would you happen to still have the Autounattend.xml for the ex490? If so, could I get a copy? I'd like to try to install 8.1 on my ex490.

Thanks

has anyone that has done a conversion to a non-WHS OS been able to get the health LED to stop flashing. I converted mine to Win 7 so i could use it as a CrashPlan BU server. everything works great but the health LED flashes blue and none of the HDD lights flash when they are being accesses.

There was a thread or two on getting the lights to somewhat work for whs 2011 and win2012E. Both being 64 bit os'es, but it took drivers and such that will most likely not work on the win 8 win 7 os.

You might do some searching on the threads for getting the lights to work, but my guess is the stuff you need won't be available anymore.
Best solution is put a piece of black tape over the light so you can't see it. I know the lights were what made WHS v1 so great, but it was built into the OS/HP app and not an easy thing to fix.
Good luck.
P.s. Great work install an updated OS without being able to see.
I bought two of the vga cables so I can cheat and watch my installs if needed, but you saved some money and time.
