newbie here and sign in a few days ago.. i manage to buy a EX490 stock at craigslist for really cheap since i been wanting to upgrade my 2X DNS-323..

i notice not many post of freenas here even after google search? is it not fully functional in our mediasmart? i tried it a while ago after after creating a usb boot disk and works really well except the drive bay led lights and blinking red/white light on the bottom but everything else works..

it's my first time installing and using freenas and so as whs v1 since i have my DNS-323 for years..

anyone else using freenas instead of the stock WHS v1?

here is some screenshot - i tested it on an old 250 and 160gb.

Hi Mike,

I'm a newbie at this too and was also interested in FreeNAS (made a USB stick). However, after reading a bit more about it - it seems as though the ZFS file system (one of FreeNAS's main features) requires huge amounts of ram. This is not possible in a mediasmart server so you have to install the UFS version of FreeNAS.

Another alternative is Nas4Free - I didn't try installing this yet but apparently this is a continuation of the original FreeNas project before the rights to the name were acquired by IX Systems. This may be more suitable if you are not going to use ZFS.

If you decide to give either of these a go it would be great to hear how you get on.

So far I have been really enjoying the simplicity of WHS but I may crave for more control and performance further down the line.
