I originally read about this method on this forum. I took a chance and decided to give it a try. I was tired of the paperclip recovery process.
Long story short - it worked. I followed the instructions throughout and it just worked.
Originally, I wanted to replace a system drive that was starting to give me some errors. I got a new WD black 2TB HD and performed the system recovery as outlined
in this 2 page tutorial http://www.mdwebsolutions.co.uk/EX490_R ... covery.pdf

My new system drive was working great. After about a month (and after a power outage - server down) I couldn't log into the console. I attempted to go to
hpstorage:55000 and download a fresh connector software and try a reinstall, but no luck. I was feeling a little frustrated.

I did see some info on the Internet about doing a server recovery to fix this problem - so what the heck l would try to run server recovery again!
I found my bootable flash drive and the CD I originally used to perform the server recovery (see the pdf) for my new HD. I plugged the flash drive into the server
(EX495), pulled the system drive out about an inch, started the server, waited about 6-7 seconds, then pushed the system drive back in. I sat down at
a windows 7 desktop on my network and placed my burned server recovery cd into my desktop and ran server recovery. I actually left the pc and had dinner. I wandered down some time later and I had to click this and click that - you know ordinary questions that were straight forward.

The cd ran the necessary files and I was up and running. I was actually upstairs watching a baseball game and came down and the server was running.
I lost my add-ins. I did not lose any of my backups?? I had to add my users - no problem.

I have a feeling this is really old news to many of you who have had to run a server recovery but this bootable flash drive plus a user created system
restore/recovery cd was a pleasure to do - really. No paperclip!

My purpose in writing this was to acknowledge that the method works (at least for me - twice!) and to thank whomever originally posted this method.
If this is redundant and old news - sorry about the redo.

Well that is great that this worked for you.
I am glad that you are happy with the resolution.
But it appears to be over complicated for my use.

Personally I just try the paperclip method on my ex490.
If it fails then I wipe the system drive and start over.

It has never failed and it is a two step process using the stock cd's.

For me it seems to be a simpler process
