Hello all. I've been lurking the forums for a while after purchasing a used EX490. I have upgraded the CPU and am finding my WHS to be a great little improvement in my home.

However, I find it to be too noisy. My desktop computer is quieter and it bugs me a lot. So I was looking around for posts about modding away the noise.

I figure there are three ways to make it less noisy.

1. Use silent HDDs, like Caviar Green.
2. Replace the two fans.
3. Replace the PSU fan.
4. Something I haven't though of.

1. is not an option, I don't have the funds to buy four new HDDs.
2. seems fairly straight forward and cheap but I haven't found a single post on this. Has anyone ever replaced the fans and if so, are there improvements noise-wise? I have a few spare 80mm noctua fans that are pretty silent that I was thinking about using but I don't know if the EX490 needs some special kind of fan.
3. This seems pretty difficult, but I am willing to try it if there is a significant reduction of noise. Has anyone tried it?

So I would like to ask this great forum for any help and info on reducing the noise from the EX490.

Thanks!

2. Replace the two fans.

Probably is the best cheapest option.
If you upgraded the CPU.
Don't know what to?
Then possibly the CPU is running hot(Arctic Silver is your friend)
The RPM's are probably running higher than normal.
Only you can tell what is going on.

Thanks for your inputs!

Fans spinning at 1200rpm which is normal, and CPU isn't over heating, around 34 C if I remember last time I checked.

Alright, I'm going to take out the HDDs and start it up and try to find the source of the noise. If it's the fans, then I'll replace them with quieter ones. Maybe the noise from the PSU, fans and HDDs are combining and in that case I'll try to hide the server away instead.
