I recently decided to change cloud backup providers (from Carbonite to CrashPlan) and as a result realized that the upload and download speeds on the WHS do not match what my service provider's promised speed (FIOS - 50 mbps download and 25 mbps upload). I only get ~25 mbps download and ~5 mbps upload using the FIOS specific speednet tool. The WHS is plugged directly into the FIOS router (not through a switch and I'm using a 5 foot cable) but what is interesting is that I have another main computer (Windows 7) right next to the WHS and plugged directly into the router. When I run the exact same FIOS speednet test, my Windows 7 computer results match the promised FIOS speed. So why are my upload and download speeds so much slow on the EX 495 and is there anything I can do. I have installed the latest RealTek drivers and still no difference in speed. I have even tried different CAT 5 cables but the performance still does not match that of my Windows 7 computer. Am I missing something? I'm considering migrating to Windows 2012 Server Essentials on a HP Proliant nl401 microserver and it's times like this when I can't figure out the WHS performance issues that push me to that point. Any ideas? Thanks!!!

Are you using the default Internet Explorer on the WHS? You can try another browser such as Chrome. There's no bandwidth limiting in WHS that I'm aware of.

Alex - thanks for the suggestion and I actually did all my testing in Chrome as I didn't want to deal with messing up all the default security settings in IE, I'm really stumped on this one. I was wondering if it could be a plug-in since its actually a pretty fresh restore of the OS due to a drive failure about three months ago. If it was a hardware issue with the NIC, I would expect it to work or not work but not illustrate reduced performance. I really don't want to migrate away from WHS to Windows Server 2012 Essential and new hardware but I'm not sure if I can deal with the throughout issues. Thanks again.

I had a similar problem same setup but it was the win7 desktop that was slow.
I re-booted everything router, desktop ,server.
Then I powered down everything with the buttons.
No joy.
Still win7 was slow very slow.

Then I realized that it has wol.
Meaning there must always be power to the motherboard so the nic card could wake up the desktop.
I unplugged the power to everything. re-seated the utp cables . Plugged it all back in booted up and poof super fast again.

I am not sure if the same is true on the server. But what the heck give it a try.

Thanks and I tested completely turning off all the devices and unplugging them but I didn't see any increase in performance.

I did try some "automated" network setting enhancements from FIOS on the WHS which did bump the speed up to about 15 mbps (from about 6-7 mbps) so I guess I should be happy with that.

I also directly plugged another two laptops into the router, both running Windows 7, to test them and ironically the older laptop performed slower, similar to the WHS, but the newer laptop performed similar to my desktop with upload speeds of 25 mbps or faster. Still can't really explain the difference but I'm now thinking it could be more hardware (hard drive speeds - WHS uses all "green" 5400 rpm drives like the old laptop) than a router/network issue. Thanks.

I just did a test at speedtest.net and got comparable speeds on my EX495 that I get on my Win7 desktop, both at the high end of the specified speeds from Comcast. Be sure you're running the tests against the same server, different locations or networks can have different speeds.
