Post subject:  My EX495 is dead, but is it done?

Long story short, I inadvertently plugged Fan 1 into the backplane but off by one pin. Bam, everything went dead.
No lights or anything. I have a debug board and that verifies no video either.

I did try shorting Pins 1 and 2 (black to green) on the power supply connector and the PSU seems to run (at least the fan comes on). And the Ethernet lights even flicker. But that's all.

Why was I messing with the fans? That's a longer story. A year or so ago the PECI temp. reading would go from actual (32 Deg.C idling) to 36866 and the fans would run at full speed. That problem seemed to go away on its own. Last week it returned. It was intermittent. The temp. would flicker from actual to 36866 (it was always 36866) and the fans would go up and down all day. So I pulled everything out and re-seated everything, re-Arctic Silvered the CPU and the problem was the same or worse. I thought maybe a good heating would clear a stuck gate or something so I ran it with the fans unplugged, looking to heat it up to 70 or 80 Deg. C. Indeed, the issue seemed to go away and in my foolish haste to plug the fans back in and see what happened when it cooled down, I bricked it.

So I'm looking for any ideas of what I might try to revive it or at least confirmation that its pretty much done for.
Thanks.
Tom

I took my homeserver apart (ex490) and did a CPU replacement, all worked fine! Should have stopped then! But I found the unit was running hot under heavy load o I took the thing apart again and attempted to attach an extra fan… and now I have the same issue you described.

If someone has any ideas or suggestions I am also very interested!

Pieter

I believe in the wiki is a pin-out for replacing the psu unit . Could be a good reference for checking if your psu died.

Thanks for your suggestion, it took the server apart again en tested the power unit as described in the post you suggested. In my case the power unit works, so something else must be wrong. Any other things I can try?

Other than remove add on fan and go back to stock cpu for a test. No!

I tested the voltages and all three 12v pins register 11.73 volts. Would that be enough of a variation from 12v to keep it from starting?

Not sure.
Most specs are 12v+ but your multii meter may be off a tad.
But I would think it is okay.
I would at least remove the add on fan to test.
Possibly the fan is bad or wired incorrectly and is pulling down the voltage.

Replaced original CPU and removed extra fan, still nothing. Must have fried something when i placed the fan incorrectly. Does this mean my homeserver turned into a nice looking piece of decor?
