Post subject:  My HP EX490 Fan and noise help

Lately my HP EX490 is a little louder. I don't know if it is because I added 2 more 2TB HDDs on it. How can I varify the fans are working? Is there an app for this?

Thanks

You can feel air blowing out of the back of the server if the fans are running. Fan speed is also displayed on the Hardware sub-tab of the HP Settings tab in the Home Server Console.

The fan in the EX490 is small. Is there a good way to promote better cooling?

Put a desk fan in front of it? :-)

There are two fairly large fans in the ex490 though? I only have heat issues cause I upgraded to a quad core CPU.

This is likely the cause. Not only do the 2 HDDs produce their own heat that's now added to the mix, they also have the effect of hindering airflow somewhat and the PSU has to work a little harder to power it all, meaning it is also producing a little more heat.

When was the last time you cleared dust out? That often helps. What is ventilation around the unit like; does it sit in free space?

The server really has nothing around it. I open the lid and use compressed to blow outward. Is that the best way?

Just be sure to use your finger or something else to stop the fan from rotating while you are blowing it out with compressed air. Overspinning fans with compressed air can often damage/ruin them. Don't forget there is a small fan in the power supply you need to protect from overspinning too!
