In theory, would this work in my ex490? http://www.oempcworld.com/OEMPCworld-co ... 400ER.html

It appears to be a single 8 GB DIMM, albeit at a prohibitive price. (just wondering, unless prices drop, it would, of course, be cheaper to do a full roll-your-own server than get this...)

What about an Intel Xeon x3085? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819117134

It's a socket LGA 775, but the FSB on it is 1333 MHz, and I note that the current processor is 800 MHz... I've read that the 1066MHz processors work and get automatically adjusted for without futzing manually in the BIOS.

Most people think this would be over kill on a 32bit system. there are posts about getting complete 4gb to work I dont know anyone that did 8gb. 8GB Chip would be nice with WHS 2011.

I agree with T-Bone, an 8GB chip won't be use unless its 64 Bit. As fas as the Xeon it could be possible. You will never know until you try.

My concern with xeon processors are the power requirements. Not much will be left for the hard-drives with most available xeons.

Have you thought about the Quad Core chips like the Q8400S, Q9550S, Q95050S etc. They will drop in and being the S model are the same TDP rating as the stock chip.

I run an Q8400S in mine and use virtualisation. Though now I have upgraded to WHS2011 but now considering Window Server 2012 with some more virtualisaiton so would be interested to know if anyone has got a 8GB or larger DIMM to work in EX490/5.

Cheers,
Al
