I was thinking of upgrading my EX495 to an Intel E5700 that supports VT-x and 4G of ram to run Xen or KVM hypervisors. Does anyone know if the EX495 (unmodified) BIOS recognizes VT-x enabled processors? Better yet has anyone successfully run KVM or Xen on their EX495?

Anyone?

I'd like to order the processor and ram, but want to make sure that virtualization is enabled in the (unmodified) bios.

Thanks.

A search turned this up: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=5512&start=169

It sounds like you need the debug cable to access the BIOS, Charles has them for sale in the Marketplace forum.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the response. I do have a debug cable from Charles...works great. Not sure how I missed that entry in that post but that answers part of my question in that a VT-x enabled processor show up in the bios. But I still can't find if anyone has successfully run any type of hypervisor on their MSS. I'll know later today as my E5700 and 4G ram module arrives. I'll post back with an update. BTW, I don't expect much performance from 4G of ram and a 3.0Ghz dual core. I'm just running some tests.

Installed the E5700 and the 4G of ram. The bios recognizes the VT-x capabilities of the 5700. Ubuntu server 11.10 sees the cpu virtualization capability (vmx). Installed KVM and successfully ran an Ubuntu VM. Everything seems to work fine. Next I'll try Xenserver from Citrix.
