The q9550 is designed to run a lot hotter than the q9550s.
So you may have high temperature issues with it.
The s at the end of the number designates it as a low temp chip.
The current chip you have has a rating of like 35
The q0550 has a rating of 95
The q9550s has a rating of 65
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_design_power
All I am saying is I would have opted for the lower TDP to mitigate shutdowns due to over temp issues.
Which is what I did and why it was so difficult to find one.

How did this work out? I am upgrading my computer an I have a Q9450 95W in it. I want to swap it in my media server.
Did you ave to add a fan to the CPU heat sink?

2x 25mm infront of the CPU heatsink have previous been installed in other board members servers. Take a look at frozencpu for their units. Not too loud, and move some significant air. An added highlight is that no mounting features are needed as the outer casing creates an interference fit.

WHere do you connect the fans to for power?

There is a FAN Header in the front of the motherboard near the PSU Connector. Here is a pic Alex posted in one of his writeups of the area where the Fan Header is so take a close look to see it.

Yeah, I have seen these before. However funny enough my board does not have that fan header. There is a spot for it on the board but there is nothing soldered into it.
Weird, I wonder if I have an older or newer board. 100806 is the mfg date on the inside sticker.

EDIT by looking at this: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/blog/wp ... emoved.jpg
Mine looks like it is a newer board.

Would I be able to splice it right into the 5V on the power supply?

Those are the fan headers on top of the backplane. Those have been there since day one in all models except the LX series.

I was actually referencing the date on that sticker. Mine is form 2010, his is from 2009.

Here is a pic of my board. See what I mean.

I see what you mean now. I wonder if the contacts on the motherboard are hot and if so then you could solder some leads on them if you have the skills to do so otherwide you could pick up 12v source off the PSU for the fan you have in mind. Some have attached 1 or 2 40mm fans infront of the CPU Heat Sink. I recall one person installing a fan in the front grill to pull in additional air flow which is something I did on one of my modified MSS Port Multipliers I built.

Before you attempt anything I would urge you to place a small 4" Table Fan in front of your Server with the door open and let it blow air into it. Try to concentrate the air flow to the Motherboard/PSU Assy. Do this will cost you about $6 if you do not have one but it will inject more air into your server than any retro fitted fan modification. By doing this you can best determine if adding additional fans is worth while or not. Personally I have several of these fans which I have used to help troubleshoot heat issues where the server would shut down before I could get a change to see what was going on and the fans helped keep the server running for long periods of time. Now the server I am refering to is not an EX49x but an EX47x and the real solution to the issue for that server was Alex's Fan Speed Control which only works for the EX47x but the point I am trying to make is the small 4" Fans can come in handy from time to time.

Do you know of any 25mm fans that are 12V? All the fans i find are 5V fans. Is it bad to use a wire tap off the 5V on the PS like from a car stereo or would I be better off soldering it to the 5V with some shrink wrap. I have the skills to solder. I also read you can use a LM7805 regulator to drop from 12V to 5V, would that be a better option?

Don't know off the top of my head but you can try using Google which is your best friend for information. What I do know is that those who have installed fans for their processors have used 40mm 12v fans and if you perform a Site Search on this you should be able to find examples of the use of these fans. If you look closely at the fan in your PSU its a 40mm fan.

As I have mentioned previously I would place a 4" desktop fan in front of your server with the door open and inject air over the Motherboard/PSU Assy and observe what if any improvement that makes. If no improvement is noticed then it would be fair to say installing a small fan in your unit will not be bennificial since the smaller fans have a lower CFM Rating and in a passive cooling system air flow is extremely important.

I ordered one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016C ... 00_s00_i00

For 4 bucks ill see what I can do with mounting it somewhere. My only concern would be the 20mm width.
Ill keep you posted. In all honesty im not seeing temp problems as of yet. idle temps are 45 deg. C
