What is the best CPU to put as an upgrade for is EX490 server? I put an E6550 but i don't think it's duo core.

The E6550 is a duel core 2.33 GHz, 65W processor.

A forum member JDookie is having success with the Q9300 which is a quad core 2.5 GHZ 95W Processor. I only mention it because he didn't have his EX490 very long before he went hunting for processors to increase his server performance for media streaming. viewtopic.php?p=70998#p70998

You may want to try contacting him to see how the processor is working out for him since by now he has quite abit of time running it.

Or check out the existing 23 page sticky topic with everyone's experience upgrading the CPU:

"the best" is completely up to what your needs are, which you don't indicate in your post. Power savings? Horsepower for encoding/transcoding? Bang for buck?

My E6550 doesn't come up as duo core which is weird. Is there a setting or something? I want pure power so that I can stream movies on the fly without hiccups

That is exactly what I saw online but if you look at the link i posted it only shows 1 core. Is there a setting i need to adjust? This would really suck =(

Any update on this? Really would love for this CPU to be detected as a duo core

I have rebooted over 50 times in the matter of 3 months are CPU-Z still shows it as one core

Try REALTEMP and see how many cores that shows. There is no settings in the bios which would affect the number of cores shown. You may have a bad processor but I would try another third party tool which shows cores.

Damn it still shows 1 core. Are you sure there is not a setting on the bios? Never been in it so I have no idea. Can a core actually go bad?

ok i downloaded a program callwed HOT CPU Tester Pro.
It says I have
2 physical processors available and
1 logical processor available what does this mean?

REalTemp 360 says I only have 1 core

CPU-Z says 1 core as well.

So kinda lost as to why it shows one core on those programs but two on another.

Your CPU according to the specs on Intels website indicates it has no hyper-threading and if it did then that would account for Logical Cores so I am clear why your CPU shows logical cores but it does have 2 physical cores. Now if it had HT then it could in theory show up as a quad core with 2 Physical and 2 Logical Cores but that is not the case here.

If you RDP or RDC to your server and look at the task manager and select the Performance Tab how many processor graphs is it actually displaying? If you were to look in the device manager under CPU does it display 2 processors? Last if you look at System Properties and select the General Tab does it display the correct CPU.

The last thing I would look at is the performance of the server. As you are aware a single core processor is not as efficient as a duel core processor and the simplest area to look at is when you stream media especially if your server is doing the transcoding. A single core processor will lag abit but this should not be very noticable with a duel core processor.

It appears to me you have a bad cpu. I ran hot cpu and for your system it should show 2 physical processors and 2 logical processors, it is missing 1 logical processor, so I'm assuming it is a defective cpu. My quad core does not support hyperthreading and it shows 4 physical and 4 logical. I don't know why they specify it like that but they do, so you have a core which is not working. If anyone has the bios setting for the EX490 maybe there is something set in error because it does recognize the 2 physical cores it just can't do anything with one of them.
