I fully understand but if you want to get into your BIOS then you need a debug cable there is no other safe way to do this.

The debug cable I recommend is made by VOV Technologies and you can read about it from the link below:

viewtopic.php?t=8066

Take the time to read through the thread which contains many posts from other forum members who have purchased and use these cables. I own 2 of them and they work great in my EX470's. You can also make your own if your upto the task and have the experience and tools but for me I chose to buy rather than to build.

Here is how I installed mine just to give you and idea of how I chose to route the cable and provide a simple means of being able to service my server in future. viewtopic.php?p=70165#p70165

What I do not know is what the actual BIOS in the EX490 looks like or what options it has or does not have for you to tweak to resolve the issue your looking to address. My feeling is that if no one has responded about this by now that there may not exist an option to resolve your issue in the BIOS but even it this is true the Debug Cable is a good investment as it will open up a new world of possibilities for you and no longer will you need to perform any blind installs or modifications which makes having the debug cable worth while. One day if god forbid your LAN Port Dies the DEBUG Cable will come in handy to allow you to install things like a USB-LAN Adapter to put your server back online again. If you opt to upgrade to WHS2011 again no need to do it blind which makes life much easier.

cirrus, you asked if the EX490 has an option to enable the dual core. I'm not quite sure if this ever came up, but are you the original owner of the EX490?

I ask this because if you are not the original owner, the argument could be made that the previous owner made some mods that you'd never get to the bottom of unless you either (preferably) had the debug cable or at the bare minimum flashed the BIOS with a known good EX490 BIOS--which again is still best done WITH the debug cable.

If you are the original owner, and you have never made any BIOS changes before (including flashing the BIOS), then I would not be entirely convinced there still isn't a CPU problem.

As an EX490 owner, I have never made a single change to my 490's BIOS. Not once. It shipped with a stock Celeron, which I replaced with an E5300. Booted up, saw one core. Rebooted, and the second core was there. You've obviously done this, and yet you're seeing only one core. The EX49x will see multiple cores without any BIOS modifications. The EX48x servers are a different story--they need a little bit of help, but the EX49x servers will pick up on the multi-core CPU without any problem. There are folks on this forum running quad cores, so I know the EX490 is capable of pretty mighty CPUs.

Getting that debug cable needs to be your next priority...I have some stuff on eBay now, and the proceeds from those items are going for--you guessed it--a debug cable. Yeah, it's $80 but in the days you've spent pulling your hair out over this...trust me, you've spent more than $80 in time in this endeavor, so it's time to get the cable and finally be able to get a visual of the BIOS.

If you want, go ahead and run the AFUWIN tool and do a BIOS dump (save a copy of your BIOS), and open the ROM file in AMIBCP...navigate to the same screen I screen-capped in my previous post. Please screen cap that and post it here...I will admit I'm intrigued to at least compare what is in your BIOS to mine. This is going to be a read-only exercise. There may be an obvious item that jumps out, but I still have a feeling something is amiss with your CPU.

If you have another PC with a multi-core CPU--which I'm led to believe because you said you tested the CPU out in another box--you should try that CPU in the server. If that processor's multiple cores show up, then you've confirmed a bad CPU.

Ok so it looks like both my bios and your bios is the same. I have two dou core chips. A E5400 and a E8600 and i can confirm that both work when i put them on my pc. Task manager shows dou cores and everything. But my EX490 task manager does not show the dou cores nor in the hp console. Device manager on the other hand shows two cpu chips for the cores so im lost as hell here.

Go into device manager, look for processors, open it up and then for each processor go to properties and update the driver. You may have to wind up deleting one processor and let it find it again. It's a shot in the dark but sometimes the drivers get corrupted and you need a fresh copy in the system. Can't figure any thing else since the system see's 2 processors and the app(task manager only sees 1) and the only thing between the hardware and the apps is the drivers.

If updating drivers doesn't help, I would recommend doing a system restore to lay down a new copy of the operating system because somethings not right with what you have now.

Go to the HP site and read the ex490 Manual - the section on doing a server recovery.

If you read the manual on your ex490 it will tell you a server recovery preserves the data and a factory reset loses the data. Don't do a factory reset. Learn about your server.
