So, with all my PCs now running Windows 7 RTM, I'm thinking in the near future I might give the PP3 beta for WHS a try but in looking at the threads on PP3, it's been pretty quiet here and it's hard to tell if the silence is because it's running so well there is little to troubleshoot or if no-one is really running it. Anyone running it and what do you think?

I've been holding off until I get my DIY WHS up and running, hopefully this weekend. Curious to hear what the general consensus is as well.

I've also just gotten everything up to Windows 7 RTM. Now it's time for PP3.

But jog my memory... this is going to normally uninstall if it goes bad, or before the final PP3 comes out, right? I've got too much invested in my WHS to have to rebuild it.

My general rule of thumb when dealing with anything beta is to not try it on anything that I am not willing to loose. Just my thoughts.

I'm not sure if it is the 2.5 software update or the PP3 Beta, but my MSS is driving me nuts with the "Updating port forwarding to your router failed" messages. I really think it is the PP3 Beta though. Otherwise, I really like the MediaCenter interface, and yeah the W7 back is good too.

Does port forwarding work, you just get that message? If so same happens to me, I think PP2 did it to my MSS.

I'm on PP3 now, for 4 days, no real change really.

granted that i've to use the WMC perks, but as far as functionality, it works with Win 7. Period.

I'm actually on RTM for Windows 7, and everything is working great, I've yet to a restore or anything like that, but it backs up, recognizes, it looks like its good to go. no bugs yet and port-forwarding worked fine, just like before.

I went for it... it seems to work well so far. It's archiving all the Windows Media Center recordings I'd saved up... which is good because the other Win7 Ultimate systems with WMC wouldn't have been able to access them otherwise. I'd stil like to find some way to convertu them to a more portable format,... such as AVI.

You could try a program like DVRMSToolbox or MCEBuddy which is set to automatically look for recorded tv content any carry out user defined actions (like converting to another format). I don't know if these programs would work on the MSS, you would probably just have to load on a PC, but if you are recording tv then you already have a pc on.

I got around to installing PP3 beta 1 on my MSS. Installs easily and no problems so far. The changes in PP3 are subtle but nice if you're running Win 7 on your client PCs. I like how it brings your content on the MSS into you Win 7 Libraries.

Think you'll only notice changes if you are running WMC/Win 7?

Correct, most of the benefits of PP3 are visible if running Win 7 but there are a few benefits that don't require you to be using WMC in Win 7.

The archiving of recorded TV is a very nice one. I'm recording classic old films via Windows Media Center to watch at a later time. Now I can watch them on my HD set using my HP extender without having to move them over to WHS manually. And it's slick how I can delete them from my Windows 7 Media Center and have that delete carry over to WHS within moments. This is the quick way to keep space requirements down (which even with severla terabytes can get out of control).
As for Windows 7, everything but my WHS is Windows 7, and there is no way I'd ever go back. There's about a minimum of 100 reasons to be there.
