I Bought recently Edgestore (Edge10) DAS501t. It is 5 bay SATA-II multiplier enabled HDD enclosure.

Technical specs PDF:

Works great with my EX490. I have now 3 drives attached to it and everything is working nicely.
There is actually 2 fans, one 120x120 behind the drives and one small noisy 40x40 fan behind the CFI-250W PSU
witch was a big dissapoint with it whirling noise makes me crrazy (nowhere could be seen that that fan even exists), will do some modification to that later :)
Actually whole unit is CFI manufactured in Taiwan...

There are some minor issues though, if someone could help..

Question: the Disk Management for WHS doesnt show temperatures of the DAS's harddrives at all in the list as shown here:

Image

The DAS501t is equipped with SiL3531 SATA Controller according to the disk management storage details.
Is it normal behavior that the temps of the external sata controller HDD's cant be seen or is there someway to get
them to be seen?

Edit: Second question, Should WHS be balancing the files beetween drives? Mine have stuck to 97% 97% 97% and 7% 7% 7% whats happnin? :)

Hard disk sentinel is the answer for smart data from the SiL3531 SATA Controller!
Widely used here at the medismartserver.net...

As far as the drive usage. WHS V1 is known to use new drives as it needs them. So as new data is written to the system, it will start filling the new drives.
There was a addin [ Drive balancer ] that use to be used to
1) flush all the data off the Main OS/dat drive onto the other storage/pool drives.
2) to balance the data among all drives.

Most people quit using it as mostly what it did was cause lots of disc reading and writing (wear).
I used It one back on the EX-470 I started with to Flush the data off the main drive. But then realized how much it was thrashing the drives and stopped using it.

Hope this helps
Good Luck and enjoy....
