Using WHS PP3 on an Intel D510MO board. 2x 2TB HDs, 4Gb DDR2 800. DIR-655 Gbit router.

Was just wondering if there are any real-world performance gains I would benefit from by using a dedicated NIC as opposed to the onboard Realtek. I know there but minimal gains on CPU usage by using a dedicated NIC, but my needs/usage are fairly simple to begin with.

- File Server (large MKV files across 2x WDTV Live units)
- Backup for 1 PC
- Backup for 1 Mac

I haven't really experienced any transfer slowdowns or bottlenecks, except in some cases where transferring large files from my PC (Win7, SSD) to the WHS box.

Is it worth going dedicated NIC in my case?

Thanks!

I'd probably not make a change unless you are having an issue.

I have the realteks on my board as well.
I was able to team them together and they worked OK.
Never could really attribute any issues to them, so I agree theres no need to upgrade.
Unless you freak on tech stuff like I do, I always go overboard and put a 4-port gigabit card in and teamed all the ports for a 4gb connection to my network.

Yep it's cool but doesn't really gain me anything in a single system connection and only marginally in a multi system connection.
But you must also bare in mind my setup is anything but typical.
My server has two full time VPN's to offsite locations to which I do backups
I also run several security camera's and four HTPC's three desktops and two laptops and a second WHS.
Even with all that I never saw enough load on the realteks to justify a change, I'm just a geek and can't help myself.

thanks for the replies.

I guess the Realtek will be fine....especially when considering my meager needs.

Having said that, just saw a few brand news Intel Gbit NICs on ebay going for $12 each/shipped. :)
