I have ALMOST convinced my parents to let me build a home server. However, before I find a final list of parts to build the system with, I would like to know what the server would be doing.
List:
Backup
Media streaming
File Server
Networked storage (NAS)
TV recording
Torrent box
Game server (if we increase our internet bandwidth)
Vent/Teamspeak/Mumble Server (if we increase our internet bandwidth)
what else??????

Do I really need a firewall or a virtual router? Also, I don't need an email server, i'm fine with my regular AOL account (unless there is a huge benefit). Also, for a house, a print server would be useless, because my family don't want to walk to the printer when they print something. They are happy with having their printer next to them...

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks

Sounds like you have most of the uses covered. I use mine for local system backups, media streaming, usenet downloads, and remote server backup over vpn.

I also use mine for remote access to documents, great when on the road. Another thing that I have really liked is the ability to back up my remote laptops from my hotel room on the road. I've been sandboxing on an old laptop lately and it is nice to know that I can back up the work that I am doing out here, and restore to an old version if I hose it up on the road! Installing Hamachi vpn software on the server and on each travelling machine has been very handy.

Installing a firewall on a WHS box can cause you issues (like locking you out of the machine!) so it is not recommended.

How big a server are you looking at? Going to give Damian a run for his money? See his Andromeda project here: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4816&start=0 That's 20 drives at about $120 each, right? $2,400 in drives alone! Yikes! Of course, most home builds are not this big, but this project was educational for me and I'd suggest you hit that thread, and the others in the DIY area of the site.

Good luck with your project and let us know how it goes! Pictures are appreciated...

Jim
