When I built Shawshank I used two Supermicro SATA controller cards. One is the SAT2-MV8 and the other is the SASLP-MV8. I only get SMART data with the SAT2-MV8 card. I wasn't too bothered by this but of late I have been having a lot of problems with my WHS. It looks like it is a bad drive which I was able to isolate since it is connected to the SAT2-MV8 and I can retrieve the SMART data. This got me thinking though, I have no way of monitoring the drives connected to the SASLP-MV8 unless I periodically switch the drives around (move the drives connected to the SAT2 card to the SASLP and vice versa), which is obviously not optimal. Anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot why the SASLP doesn't give me SMART data, I am tempted to just replace that card with a SAT2-MV8 to avoid any potential headaches. You can see my full build in my signature.

Have you tried HDSentinal?
It can retrieve SMART data from some cards that WMI cannot.
It didn't help me with the Areca's but you might have better luck.

Are you just using the free version, any benefit to the paid pro version?

Still curious why WHS console doesn't pick up any SMART data though, I know others are getting SMART data with their SASLP. The downside of HDSentinel is I cannot tell which drive is which, whereas at least in the WHS console I can see where each disk is located.

Can you get your SMART data with your builds through the WHS console?

Nope not able to pull any data except throughput.
No temps at all.
This is because Areca used Raid bios on my controller that does not allow direct access to the drives.
They claim this will be corrected in the next driver version but made no indication when that would be available.
Other words they told me to hush...

What i would do is keep a record of the HDD model number, which does show up, and where you have it. It may not be the most ideal way but is better than nothing.

Damian while I do not use nor do I have experience running HDSentinel does it happen to show the drive serial number somewhere. If you know where the drive is by its serial number then when your looking at a drive of interest you would then know its location by its serial number if you say created a map by drive s/n in some sort of a listing.

I know I am tired right now so I hope I was able to make some sense here.

Yeah, that is next on my list, go through each drive and log in the serial number in excel. Better then nothing.
