I live in an apartment so basement mounting is not an option for me. I have put my current WHS in a kitchen cabinet but I can sometimes still pick it out. I need absolute silence in my listening room for my audio system and when my ears are perked up I don't want to hear platter noises.

WHS does not seek much and the real issue is platter noises which make the system sound like a not so quiet case fan.

Since I could find any real quiet storage cases I am considering what is a pricey solution, and I would rather keep my costs down but sometimes I feel like I don't have an option. All components will be placed inside a wooden furniture cabinet.

My thought is to build the server in this case:

http://www.atechfabrication.com/product ... c_7000.htm

It will give me the option to use an ATX board and to have one RAID 8 lane card and one HP SAS expander. And also 2 extra 4 SFF 8088 plates.

This would be the RAID card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6816118116

This would be the SAS expander: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1484614

These would be the SFF8088 plates: http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sas_cables_ad ... 8788-4.asp

Next would be my drive storage and I think I would use these storage cases probably 3 to start:

http://www.atechfabrication.com/product ... torage.htm

So I would have 14 drives to start and 28TB. I could in theory have 8 of the storage cases and 34 drives in total and 68TB (of course with Vail only).

Any thoughts? I know its pricey and I really don't want to drop that kind of cash but it may be the only good solution for a quiet system and I see the cases as an investment. I won't need to buy them again when newer bigger HDDs come out. They should easily last 20 years or more.

I have put one of my computers in the Antec Sonata. I actually have to look for the light on the keyboard to see if the computer is on. While this only has 6 3.5 and 3 5.25, Antec also makes a bigger case that adds another 2 spaces to the mix. Realistically you are really looking at a case similar to this and a sub-drive only case. From my perspective the biggest difference is the fact that the drives are mounted on silicone.

I'd have to go look up my Newegg order to see exactly which case I have, but it's a cheap one, not a name brand liek Antec, with 6x3.5 adn 3x5.25. It came with no fans, I got a couple of 120mm high volume low rpm fans, one for the front and one for the back. I don't know the thing is even running other than the power LED and blinkign HDD LED. It sits right next to my desk and just keeps on chugging. I'm at the point where I need to either repalce all the old drives or build a new server with more drive bays.
