A hammer is technically not a toy/tool, I would put it under the category of household utensils

Agreed a Utensil it is.
BTW Do not take my advice, I'm a bit on the excentric side cutting up perfectly good hardware is nuts..
But I got lucky by virtue of stacking my cases my Heatsink was free to stand proudly out of the bottom case by approx 3/4 inch.

@Chasrobin
My console session is pretty fast from a client. 4 sec tops & I am logged in, to be exact. However when I RDP into the server the console takes 10sec to open. I am still waiting on the breakout cable & do not have the Adaptec 5805Z installed, not sure if that will even make any difference.

Been out of the loop for a second or two...Had to get surgery done, now I am now recovering. I realized I had the wrong Raid controller for my build. The Adaptec 5805z can only connect to 2 of the Norco backplanes. I will be shipping this back today.

I have now ordered an Adaptec 52445

ABM 800T Battery Kit

and 5 SFF8087 cables

I have not been having any luck with the Lights-Out program on the HP EX-495. The only option that seems to work for me is a shutdown. Is there another addin that can turn the server on & off, based on a calender schedule? Or do still need tinker with Lights-Out?

I don't know about on and off.
Lights out only handles sleep or awake for me.
And that seem pretty good so far.

The adaptec 52445 is one big card. This will be my first raid setup. I have 14 2T drives in the Norco. I went thru the adapter setup & configured Raid 6. I also noticed that the wizard sees ~18.5T of space. I was expecting it would be see about 24T. ie 14 X 2= 28 -(2x2) = 24T. I guess I will have to read up on Raid 6 some more

Each drive is advertised as 2TB. However, they are actually only 1836 GB or 1.82 TB actual. I have 23-2TB drives in Andromeda and according to Server Storage and Disk Management, the total space is only 41.96 TB.

The drives finished building the array, but for some reason WHS was only seeing 2000gig which made not sense since the Raid 6 array was about 18T. I am not sure if this was because I already had WHS installed when added the Raid card.

So decided to do another install. I created another Raid array, and got a message stating that the array can be used but performance will be degraded until the array has been completely built. I went on ahead & did the WHS install. The installation process goes thru several reboots & every time the controller was booting an alarm would go off & I would would hit enter to continue. The controller was complaining that the array was degraded. I completed the install but have no access to the array drives, & every reboot is accompanied with the controller alarm which is pretty loud too. ](*,)

So I have decided to start afresh, completely build the array first with a few drives. Once the array has been completely built then redo the WHS installation. I have 4 drives in the array setup for Raid 6. Hopefully by the time I get back home the build will be complete & I can proceed with the WHS install. Since this is my first Raid build not sure if I am following the right steps. If all else fails, I will switch the controller to JBOD & enable folder duplication

I have been struggling with my Raid array for the last couple of days/week. WHS installation goes thru several reboots before the installation completes. Every time I reboot, the controller alarm goes off with an error stating that the array is degraded or missing. I made sure I had the latest Adaptec controller software & drivers. It turns out some of my drives were doing error checks & were taking too long to communicate with the controller, hence the alarm. The controller would then mark those drives as missing or degraded if they did not respond within a specific time frame.
I finally discovered that I has 2 sets of Western Digital WD20EADS drives. 4 drives had firmware version 04.05G04 while 8 drives had version 01.00A01. The drives with firmware 01.00A01 work perfectly. The problem drives all had 04.05G04. I also have 2 Hitachi drives & these work fine in the array.

So if you are doing a Raid array
- Preferably get drives that support TLER
- Western Digital WD20EADS with firmware 04.05G04 does not do Raid well. Stick with drives with firmware 01.00A01
- Hitachi drives with JKAOA20N work fine also

One of the supposedly good WD drives fell out of the array yesterday following a system reboot. So I opened up opening a ticket with WD only to get the below response........

***************

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is Steven

Unfortunately we do not have any firmware updates available for WD20EADS drives. I would suggest using Raid Edition drives. as they have TLER enabled:
http://wdc.com/en/products/index.asp?cat=2

Sincerely,
Steven
Western Digital Service and Support

I purchased 12 WD drives for this build so the prospects of buying another batch of drives that may or may not work at almost twice the original cost is zero to nil.
I think I found a solution. I ended creating a bootable floppy that included WDTLER. So far TLER is now enabled on all the drives. The array is currently building & When I make it back home this evening, I will reboot & cross my fingers.

Hopefully watching Avatar this evening will make this week a little brighter for me :)
