YEAH!!!!! Tracking finely shows my long lost Mobo/CPU will be delivered tomorrow.
The Beast will be in the home stretch for the mechanical build portion.
And then will start the Mediacenter/WHS integration, I already have my MCE2005 doner system.
So it will be case surgery and mobo install this weekend. And then next week while waiting for other bits and pieces to arrive I will build the MediaCenter install DVD.
I figure the remaining timeline is about two weeks for os install and flight test four weeks baring any breakage for completion.
Stay tuned for detailed narration/pictures.

This is pretty interesting. My Norco 4220 case just arrived last week and I'm getting started ordering parts now. I don't need 40 drives currently, but it is certainly interesting to read about and see.

I do not have an imediate need for 40 drives.
But I have had several occasions where I wanted to do something in stages only to find the components no longer available.
So for this build I opted to go big, but still leave the door open for later expansion.
I can add approx 2-3 more 4220 chassis without much cost.
each additional stack will cost $350 for the ARC-1300IX-16 + $333 for the case + $150 for the PSU.
or right around $800-$900 to add 20 more bays. The real limiting factor is the controllers.
If I can find an inexpensive card that supports 20+ drives over sff-8087 connectors I could have a total of 6 chassis in the stack for a total of 120 drives. Of course I would probably have to switch to 220V for all those amps.

... I’ll just confirm that the current version of WHS does indeed have a 32 drive limit."

How does 120 drives or even 40 work? How do you plan to manage them?

Are you going away from WHS?

Have you considered an HP SAS expander?

@walkabt, Yes I know about the drive limitation that is a logical limitation within DE, windows2003 has no such restriction. (I have a 2k3 server at work with approx 75 drives on it, managed through Disk Manager)
So my storage pool will max out at 32drives (64TB) as win2003 x32 also has a 2TB partition limitation.
But I can mount a lot more drives format them GPT stripe them together and share them out of the win2003 side.
Also hoping Vail has no such limitations.

@CaveDiver, First thanks for the fan boards, second no I havent looked at expanders just started reading up on them.
Fill me in on what you know if you can. BTW, when is Andromeda going to get a refit she can handle a bit more hardware. :)

There's a real good thread here regarding the HP expander which is probably the best reasonably priced expander out there at this time.

As for Andromeda, I added an SATA port multiplier which can handle 10 drives via 2 esata ports. I've already attached one Sans Digital TR4M and have one 1.5 TB drive in it as a backup drive for BDBB backups. I have 3 more 2TB drives which I'm in the process of testing (1 left to go). I'll probably keep them out for the time being as I've still got about 3.5 TB of space left before I'll need to add drives. I'm at ~80% full on all 20 drives now.

The 3ware sff-8087 cables do not seem to have the sideband wire, but look to be the perfect length

The drive trays on the 4220 had a little suprise for me, sliding air dams built in.

And then theres the CPU cooler! Cool Master V8 = OMG!!!!!

No kids thats not a small soda!
Once placed in the beast this cooler actually sticks up higher that the top of the first case, so this will not work for single 4220 builds. GO BIG OR GO HOME!

Is this fast enough?

I'm glad you discovered the drive tray air flow slides. I didn't find out about them for several months until one day I was adding some new drives and noticed that some of the trays were open and some were closed. Needless to day, I opened them all up and my drive temps went down a notch.

Looks to be a incredible build. I also did not know about the vents till reading a few posts about them. Went and looked and i had 2 drives with the vents closed. Changed it right away.

Oh Yeah, I found out the sideband cables are used with expanders for drive led's and other info.
Not at all necesary and not even a formal part of the SAS std.
Doesn't have anything to do with the smart info at least from the cable mfg website.

Also another FYI, on this version of th 4220 the molex power connectors for the backplanes now have a metal retainer, unlike the molex connectors described by others or seen in pics of Andromeda.

Perhaps Norco has learned a thing or two.
And I love the fact it's screwed together rather than welded it's making my modifications much easier.
I was able to remove the entire back of the case.

The original plan was to bolt these together, but if you notice how the fan board is attached you cant remove it if their attached. So I will make easily removable attachment points.
Things got a little hairy when the cutter grabed into the material. I made a couple of oopsies but luckly nothing not fixable.
Notice the cable channel (the two smaller holes) they sit behind the fan board.
Not really necesarry but will make the cable management nicer.
And yes my neighbors love me for cutting sheetmetal at 7am. \:D/ :beerme:

Ok, just for you folks wondering how I'm going to tame two power supplies.
You make a jumper from one to the other on pin 16.
When the first PSU powers up it will drop pin 16 to ground and away we go.
So one power button controls two power supplies.

Ok, Ok I know no self respecting geek would splice in the middle of a wire because you can't get heat shrink tubing on.
But I didn't want to build a whole new cable, or buy that ugly extension.
SO,

And heres what my custom Hack-O-Cable looks like.
