Hi, I have a spare GEN2 Intel 80GB SSD, I did have two of them ion RAID 0 in my Mac Pro, I saw that Cavediver mentioned that 80GB was the minimum for WHS, but is that enough I'm sure the actual size will be less once I have it installed?

EDIT: I have just taken a WD 1TB Caviar Black's out of my drobo, (ditching it), go you think this is a better option for a system disk?

I should be ready to post some pics soon of SNIPERSTORM, my WHS build, bits are arriving on a daily basis!!!

80GB should be fine for a System Drive. I would probably go for that and use the other as a data pool drive.

BUT if you are building DIY you might consider implementing the System Drive (ONLY) as a RAID-1 (Mirror) Array. Would save the PITA of having to reinstall everything if the System Drive fails...

You should consider if you're planning on upgrading to Vail, you will need a minimum 120GB system drive.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try the SSD, I plan on keeping SS (sniperstorm) very lean for a few weeks, so if I need to reinstall or try different hardware I can, I have the EX 485 running sweet, just removing the 2TB's from there now, and replacing them with the drives from my DROBO, I will eventually upgrade the EX 485, and use that solely with the Mac's, and then use SS just for media and PC backups.

Not to hijack the thread but to inject some info.
I just read a very long and boring SSD article about how it's bad to raid them due to the way they read.
I'm not going to pretend I understood it or agree with it.
But obviously some folks feel it can induce problems and they also recomended using the SLC version for OS drives.
Long story short SSD's are confusing
What are the MLC versions used for then? doesn't make a lot of sense.

I have an MLC SSD as the OS drive in Andromeda. SLC SSD's are very expensive and mostly used in data center servers. The extra cost doesn't outweigh the perceived benefits of SLC. And, you can run MLC SSDs in RAID 1 or O without problems.

That's the same conclusion I came too.
I don't know if the article writer was trying to shill more expensive SSD's.
And I had read a bunch of good reviews some including raid's of the intel xm series SSD's which I think are MLC.
But I figure I would share the tale to instigate conversation as SSD's are very new and unknown to many of us me included.
So have you considered using two smaller SSD's say 80GB and doing a raid 0 stripe for your os drive to get back to the 160GB size, the performance should be through the roof.

I don't need a 160 GB OS drive with the current version of WHS. And for purposes of WHS, OS drive performance is not an issue. The OS only uses 20 GB and with PP3 behavior not placing any data on the data partition of the OS drive as long as there is plenty of storage pool space, I don't see any reason to do a raid 0 OS drive. If I were to do any kind of RAID with a WHS OS drive, it would only be a RAID 1, but with an SSD for the OS drive, I don't really think that is necessary.

Ah, but what about future proofing your system, Andromeda has a 120gb os drive.
Was that future proofing, or comfort space?
What I was thinking of is if your going to prep yer system for Vail by having a larger than necesarry OS drive why not get it on the cheap, get some performance out of it, and wouldn't that also help the ssd's longevity by reducing it's writes by 50%.

Yes, Andromeda has a 128GB OS drive. At the time, and I believe still now, the Kingston SSDnow V drives were only available in 64 GB or 128 GB. 64 GB is too small, so 128 GB it was. At the time I built Andromeda, Intel was the only mfg making 80 GB SSD drives and they weren't readily available, had firmware problems and were very expensive. I had no idea at the time that Vail would require a minimum 120GB OS drive, but, as with some decisions, that fortunately turned out to be a good future proof one.

Granted the cold boot times are awsome, but with an MSS sitting in sleep mode most of the time when not used isn't the sleep to wake and the following data transfers just as good on say a velociraptor drive?
