Hello, forum!

So, I decided that I was outgrowing the EX470+ Rosewill RSVS5 that I've been running for a while and that I'd take a crack at a DYI box. All the parts were sourced at the somewhat local Microcenter. The case exactly fit in the trunk of my 2-seater car. One more inch in any direction and there would have been a serious logistical problem. :)

So here are the parts:
Case: Norco RPC-450
MB: Asus P7P55D EVO
CPU: Intel i5 650 3.2GHz
Memory: 4GB OCZ DDR3-1600
Video: Radeon X300SE
Power: Seasonic S12II 380w (actually this came from New Egg)
Optical: LG DVDRW/BD-ROM drive

Internal storage: 1x Seagate 1.5TB 7200 (system)
6x Seagate 1.5TB 5900
External storage: existing Rosewill chassis is loaded with 5 Seagate 1.5TB drives
New Sans Digital 4 bay chassis is loaded with 4 Seagate 1.5TB drives
Total drives: 16x 1.5TB

I configured it so that one of the external 1.5 drives is server backup and one of the internals is just a regular non-pool drive that houses the swap file, temp directories, and workspace for MKV recoding. This gives me 19.6TB in usable pooled storage. I know that the CPU/MB/RAM is a bit overboard for a WHS, but I wanted to be able to use it for ripping and recoding. A nice side effect is that it's responsive as heck with doing regular stuff over RDP.

Power consumption according to the UPS it's attached to is 206w with the server under load, including the external disk chassis.

All in all I'm really happy with the build. It's pretty loud, but it lives in a basement storage room, so no one's there to hear it.

One question: how large can the WHS storage pool get? I think I read somewhere that 32TB was the max. Is that true?

Thanks for reading,

John

Hi John, thanks for sharing your build with us! Do you have any pictures to share?

WHS doesn't have a space capacity limitation, but it does have a max limit of 32 drives.

Alex,

Thanks very much! That's great to know about the expansion path. Being able to add another 16 drives when needed is fantastic. Real forward thinking on the part of the MS DE guys.

As for pictures, I'm afraid the rig isn't very much to look at, but here they are.

Thanks again,

John

Alex,

You're much too kind! Looking at the Andromeda and Shawshank gives me the same feeling when I'm stopped at a light in my Z4 next to an M6. s-m-all. :)

John

Haha, trust me Shawshank isn't that big, I only have room for two small people in the case
