Maximum PC has posted an article this month on how to build your own WHS for anyone who is interested I thought I would supply the link. Sometimes I wish I had gone this route over buying my EX-475 since the cost is about the same. Using a regular ATX case allows for more storage options and and a motherboard that has onboard graphics also makes it easy to hook up a monitor when necessarry.

I read the article earlier this morning. It is amazing if you read the comments that blast WHS and say that some form of linux is the only true way to go with a home server. These people seem to forget where the target audience for WHS is....

I'd have to agree, although I use Linux as well but it's not nearly as user friendly as windows, and the money spent on windows is worth it to the people who don't have a desire to learn unix. Even though I use a few linux distros I've never used a Linux server yet so I can't actually compare it to WHS. I don't really regret buying my WHS either due to the practically trouble free backups and the ability to just swap out hard drives on my pc's and start right off where I was before replacement. It's nice not to have to go thru the whole restore and reload operation.

Me too! I have an Antec 1040B-SOHO Server case sitting gathering dust. It's a brute of a case and would be *perfect* for a high-end WHS build. It has 6 internal 3.5" bays, and you could add another 5-drive backplane in the 5.25" bays and still have room for a DVD drive. It's tempting because I have most of the hardware. 8)

I've thought about it for sure, but went with the MSS because I wanted a factory-supported solution. Next time I'll build.
