OK, I was able to run the rest of the Sata cables from the HDD cages to the Sata controller card (PITA), and install the remaining two HDD cages. Turned the system on and another alarm sounded, it appears to be coming from one or both of the HDD cages. It was already late at night so I couldn't investigate further, but I should hopefully have some time tonight. The only two things I can think of that is causing the problem is that either one of the HDD cages is bad or it is a power issue. Each HDD cage (3 cages total) requires two 4-pin molex connections. For the top HDD cage I have the molex's connected directly from the PSU to the HDD Cage. For the remaining 2 HDD cages I installed yesterday I used a Molex Y splitter. When I get home later I will pull out the splitter and connect the HDD cage directly, see if that is the cause.

Well, at least I know I made the right decision waiting to migrate my MSS over to SHAWSHANK!!!

Is there no on-screen error message to go along with that alarm?

Nope, nothing. The LCD screen on the Case shows no errors, No errors come up on the monitor. I should have some time tonight to troubleshoot as it sounded like the alarm was coming from the HDD cage and not the case itself.

Even worse than the case, I have to keep fending off the in laws from coming up earlier then they need to!!!

Well, I got some good news and bad news. If you recall before I had mentioned that there was a bad sensor that was triggering a temp alarm to go off and the fans to go mach 10. Well, I found the culprit, the connection for the sensor was not set correct by the manufacturer. I switched around the connection and now the sensor reads correctly!!!

Now to the bad news, I have no clue why the case is blaring an alarm sound. I have one HDD Cage hooked up to the PSU with no issues. The moment I hook up a 2nd HDD cage this is when the alarm goes off. There appears to be no problems as WHS loads fine and if I have a drive in the 2nd HDD cage it is recgnizied. The LCD screen on the case indicates no problems. I have tried different connections with no success. I just sent over an email to Tech Support at Chenbro, so hopefully I will hear back from them tomorrow. Until then I cannot go any further :(

I feel for you man.
I am leaning toward an under-powered PSU or faulty cage.
Can you try swapping the cages around?

So it looks like it is definitely the HDD cage. The one cage that works I unplugged and plugged into the molex connections that I was using for the other 2 HDD cages and no problems. I will be calling to company today to RMA... doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling when 2 out of 3 of the cages are bad

I have lost all authority at home so Alex agreed to throw me a bone and give me some over here

As an update to where SHAWSHANK is, I returned the two faulty HDD cages and am just waiting for the replacements. I am hoping to have them next week so I can get the project completed and start testing everything out.

You haven't had very good luck with those HDD cages. Hope it is not a sign of what is to come.

By the way, congrats on the baby. Don't forget to spend some time with the new one!

Yeah, I had really hoped to have everything up and running before the family comes home from the hospital this weekend, but doesn't look like it is going to happen. I hope it is just bad luck that I only went 1 for 3 with the HDD cages.

Thanks for the congrats, things will definitely be interesting when my wife and son come home tomorrow, he actually looks like the travelocity gnome (without the beard)

So unfortunately I have run into more problems. I was able to return the 2 defective hdd cages and had 2 replacements sent, but same exact problem. I have isolated the problem to to the cages and nothing with the Server/PSU. I have one functioning HDD cage, so if I remove that cage and connect either of the two replacement cages I get the same alarm sound... I called Chenbro yesterday and tech support said they would call me back because they needed to look up the specs of the case/cage. Of course no one called me back yesterday. I also called the company where I bought the case from to see if worse case scenario I could just return the case, but I am past the 30 day return policy and will not accept. They did say that if I got nowhere with Chenbro on Monday they will speak with them directly.

One option I am thinking about doing just to get the ball rolling on SHawshank. I have one of the HDD cages working so that gives me 5 bays. I can connect the Sans Digital TR4m that I have hooked up to my mss to Shawshank (I would have to install the port multiplier card that came with the TR4M). This would give me enough free bays (9) to get me started. I could then do a server restore on the shawshank. What do you think, does it sound like this should work?

Sorry to hear about the continued problems. Very odd you're having the same issue with the two replacement cages. Almost sounds like Chenbro sent you back the same two defective cages you sent them but that would be  .

OK, here is my next update. I installed the eSATA Port Multiplier card that came with the TR4M into the server without a problem. I also just received the 3ware SATA breakout cable, so I installed in the AOC-SASLP-MV8 card and confirmed that all drives worked with the card. I ordered the Intel NIC card which should arrive this week and I plan on replacing the stock fans with either Gelid Silent 12 PWMor the Scythe KAMA PWM Fan 12cm DFS122512L-PWM. I still do not have the issue resolved with the other 2 HDD cages, but will tackle that tomorrow. Fortunately I have off this week (really first time off this year!!! ) so I hope to get this all completed, and I will update my first post with any changes to the build.
