Okay, maybe a stupid question, but why are the two SATA controller cards you used different?

Also, why did you get a seperate network card? I see the board you used already has a 1000 network port.

The network card wasn't necessary. Many people have said that the onboard NIC isn't the most reliable and I had heard a lot of good things about the Intel NIC. Since the price wasn't that expensive I figured it was worth going for, it couldn't hurt and could only help with network performance.

Really no particular reason for going with two different SATA controller cards. I originally only purchased one card (the SAT2-MV8) thinking that I would utilize the mobo sata ports for my pooled drives as well. When I decided that I only wanted to use the mobo Sata ports for only the O/S drive and Rom drive, I needed to get another card. Getting the SASLP card allowed me to utilize the PCI-E x4, whereas the SAT2 used the PCI-X. I could have just as easily purchased another SAT2 card to use with the PCI-X, but I was contemplating putting in a tv tuner card into Shawshank that needed a PCI-X, so that is why I wanted to leave that slot open.

I can see that the SATA hard drives are connected directly to the SAT2-MV8 with SATA cables. But on the SASLP card, how do you connect the SATA drives to this card? I'm not familiar with the connector on this card.

Any ideas what the power usages are between the Mediasmart and Shawshank? Thanks.

I use the 3WARE Cable, 1 Unit Of 1 Meter Multi-lane Internal (SFF-8087) Serial Ata Breakout Cable. Each cable connects to the SASLP card and breaks out with 4 Sata Connectors. Since the SASLP supports up to 8 Sata connections you would need two of these cables.

As far as power consumption I honestly never tested. I would assume that SHAWSHANK is drawing more power just based on the fact that it is running 14 HDDs now vs the 8 I was running with the MSS

Thanks! I'll probably build one myself, since I already have a case (Antec P180) that can hold about 12 HDD's, power supply (Antec TruePower Quattro 850), and 4x1TB HDD's. Any difference between SASLP card and SATA controller card.... other than the slot they fit on?... speed performance? price? I'll probably just go with one of these card for now until I need more capacity.

Are you able to spin down hard drives that are not being used with Shawshank? I heard that with HP Mediasmart, hard drives can be spun down if it's not being used to conserve energy. Maybe that's a WHS thing?

Supposedly the SASLP should perform a little faster but honestly I can't tell the difference. Given that this just a server whose purpose is streaming/storage and backup I doubt it would really matter anyhow. The one "issue" I ran in to with the SASLP is that you need to make a change to the BIOS (can't remember off the top of my head but you need to disable something like in3h". If you don't do this the WHS install will not work (I did not know this which resulted in days of pulling out my hair until the great folks here pointed this out to me)

As for Spin Down, I am not how WHS handles this to be honest. I think the drives go into a low power state, but I don't think they actually get spun down (hopefully someone else can confirm).

Great to hear you are thinking about building your own, make sure you start a new thread if you do

I have been running into some serious issues with Shawshank. About every 2-3 days I would lose access to the WHS all together. I would first see a health notification on my client pc stating that Port Forwarding had failed. Then slowly I would lose access to all my shared drives. I would also be unable to RDP in. I have a monitor plugged in to my WHS so I can still access the old fashion way, and would just get multiple errors. WHS Console would not load, with notifications that add ins were bad. I couldn't even access any drives on the WHS when logged in directly from WHS. Once I rebooted WHS everything would start up like normal. I would see an error message about the port forwarding failure, but not much else. Everything would work fine, and then in about 2-3 days the same issue would occur. At first the thought was a bad drive was causing the issue. I did have a drive that was reporting 4 bad sectors, so I removed, but once again 2-3 days later everything would fail on me again. So whatever the error is WHS loses connectivity to the Network, and all my other devices (HTPCs, PCH, etc...) then freak out, dropping the WAF of late.

I talked to the mighty Yak about the issue and he suggested looking in my WHS logs (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs) and sure enough every time this failure occurred a log was generated. An example of the error being generated (obviously x'ing out my IP manually for this post):

I am not using the onboard NIC but instead got an Intel NIC Card. Yak thinks that possibly the NIC card is failing, which would explain why I lose connectivity (although odd that it happens sporadically and a reboot fixes it). To troubleshoot further I am going to do the following steps:

- Update to the latest driver for the Intel NIC and make sure that the onboard NIC is disabled in the BIOS to ensure no conflicts
- If the error still occurs I will remove the intel NIC, load the drives for the onboard NIC, and use.
- If that fails (which hopefully it shouldn't as the thinking is the intel NIC is bad) then it would appear that somehow WHS got corrupted and a server recovery is in order.

Sounds like you are doing the right debug steps but don't forget about the router and the switch(if you are going into one). I had something similar happen with an MSS and it turned out to be the gigabyte switch it was going into. Did a restore and all for naught. Seemed to work fine for other machines into the switch but not the MSS. Switched ports and cables but nothing would fix it for long except swapping out the switch. Has been running great for 4 or 5 months on new switch.

Agree with erail, I've had two switches develop bad ports and cause strange behavior, though most commonly with the EX47x and not the newer servers.

Dbone, If ya get a chance next time this happens if you can export your system, application, WHS event logs we might be able to take a peek.
Also look at your services to see if any that should be running have stopped.
Finally try doing a repair on your network adaptor to see if that brings it back to life without restarting.
Then pay attention to how long it stays up after repair to see if your time is not halved.

I had an issue awhile back where the Nic would just stop as if it was powered off, if I repaired the nic it would last half the original time it took to fail the first time.

What I saw in the event logs was entries saying the nic was disconnected, with no appearent errors.
If I restarted the system it would stay up for a period then fail, I could repair it, and it would fail again in half that time frame.

Please let me know if this sounds similar.

I had to go looking for some of the info that ultimately helped me.

Follow the instructions in the link below which fixes most connectivity issues.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:
Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
Check if the issue is resolved.
Method 2:

To reset the TCP/IP stack go to this article and either click on "Fix it for me" or follow the instructions to fix it yourself:

How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

Check if the issue is resolved.
Method 3:

Disable the IP Helper service:
1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:
Try uninstalling IPv6 on all interfaces, removing any IPv6 virtual adapters, and resetting the TCP/IP stack. To remove IPv6, go into the properties for each network adapter and either uncheck the box next to the protocol "Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6), that will disable it, or select it and click uninstall, which will remove it off the computer. Then go into device manager and remove any 4to6 adapters, WUN miniport adapters, or tunnel adapters.

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

To flush the DNS cache:
Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click cmd in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

Once at the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns

Check if the issue is resolved.

You can click on the links below to try a few other basic internet troubleshooting steps

Troubleshoot problems finding wireless networks

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... s-networks

Troubleshoot Internet connection problems:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... n-problems

Please post back and let us know if this has helped to resolve your issue.

Not sure if it's related at all, but on my system I uninstalled all add-ons.
Disabled all IPV6 setting both in the TCPIP setting and under the cards config.
Made sure I had a fixed IP assigned that was not part of the DHCP ip address scope.
Temporarily disabled all backups.
Made sure the power saving was set to balanced, and the network adaptor was set to not turn off to save power.
Ran it for a few days to insure the problem did not re-occur then re-installed one add-on every couple of days to insure stability, then re-enabled backups.

I suppose I chalked it up to a unfriendly IPV6 dhcp on my router, a Linksys 4400N.
Once a cleaned off all the IPV6 junk and used a fixed IP it all settled down.

No more mystery hiccups.

The error message logs in all throughout the day (the same error message I posted a few posts back) in portforwarding.log. At some point though it craps out the network connection, although when the connection craps out there is no difference in the error message. A few hours ago I got the "Port Forwarding Error" health notification, yet my network connection is still functioning without issue. However, I bet when I get up tomorrow morning it will be crapped out.

I updated the NIC to the latest driver but still have the issue. Next I am going to remove the NIC card and just use the onboard NIC. I should be able to see right away if I continue to have the same problem as the problem logs in continually throughout the day. If the problem doesn't go away then we will know it is either a system or switch issue, and then I can start troubleshooting from there

OK, so as a follow up:

- I updated the driver for the Intel NIC - continued to get the Port Forwarding error message
- I disabled the Intel NIC and connected the onboard Realtek NIC. Just remoted in this morning to see the same port forwarding log being generated. However, I have no issues with access so as of now everything is working. There are two types of "errors" I encounter in the log.

This log below just repeats throughout the day. It appears as long as I get this I have no issues with network access:

So for now I will just let things ride as long as my network doesn't crap out again. I would lose connectivity every 2-3 days, so I should know pretty soon if the issue resurfaces.

Here is another issue, it is somewhat related. I have a designated user called "HTPCUser" in WHS that I use for my HTPCs. Obviously when I lose the WHS network on the HTPCs I lose access to Shawshank. The problem I have though is that once I restart WHS and get everything working again on my HTPC I cannot access the server from the HTPC. I get an error message on the HTPCs something to the effect that the user has been locked. The only way I can reestablish the connection is to go into the WHS Console, remove the "HTPCUser" user, and then add the user back. For any other users connected to my WHS I never have this problem, so not sure what is going on.

I recall seeing those first set of messages in many logs, I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Does the user account match with both username and password, on all systems? There is a security policy in place that will lock the account (for 30 minutes) if too many failed authentication attempts occur. Instead of deleting and creating the account, you should be able to unlock it via the Users control panel on the server via Remote Desktop.

For my HTPC that uses the username "HTPCUser" I don't have a password set up on the HTPC. To make sure that I could access my shared folders on this HTPC at startup I had a bat file automatically run that loads the username/password of my WHS user. I have this exact same setup on my other HTPC except using username "Damian" and have never had an issue with the user being locked.

How would I unlock via the WHS console? I would go into to the Users control panel, highlight the user, click "disable user", and then "re enable user", but this would not work. Only deleting and redoing the user worked.

Not via the Console, by logging onto the server via RDP and using the Users control panel.

You lost me, I rdp'd in, go to Start -> Control Panel, and then what, I don't see anything specific to Users?
