As you can tell by the picture below, my setup of a rom drive is less then optimal. Since it appears I may be able to get in a slim dvd rom into the case, I had a quick question. Is there any downside to going with an external USB rom drive vs. an internal Sata drive? So for instance, let say the O/S HDD fails, or something goes wrong where I am required to do a restore/recovery via cd would I be better off with an internal sata drive (possibly lose USB drivers in a crash which would render the USB drive useless)?

Thinking about it a little bit more, there is no way for me to secure the rom drive if I go internal. I am sure I could rig something up, but it may make more sense to just go with an external USB drive

The external drive would be more flexible, you could use it on other devices. I actually use an old Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive, works great.

That is what I was thinking. I eventually want to have a Blu Ray drive hooked up to the server as well, and the internal slim lines are way too expensive.

Well, just got my HDD cages delivered to work. I appreciate the amount of packaging that goes into this kind of stuff, but I could probably fit about 8 MSS' in the box used just to ship 3 cages!!! So it looks like the only thing holding me back is getting a new O/S drive from NewEgg, which I assume by the time they get my RMA and send me a new one probably won't be until next week, so I should have a few more days to test out the system before I get serious.

Oh yeah, I forgot to order extra SATA cables #-o

I used an external DVD drive to load the OS on my DIY. No need for internal unit, that will barely ever get used.

I have an internal slimline DVD and a diskette unit in my Supermicro DIY. I find that I use them quite often. Now I do DVD ripping on the quad core server, so it's understandable I use them more often. The server handles alot of activities that many people do on their main PC, but I chose to have many long running cpu intensive tasks not clogging up my desktop.

I think eventually I would like to have a DVD/Blu Ray combo drive attached to my server so I can move my blu ray ripping over to the server instead of my desktop. Also (and don't know if I will ever use this feature), with the SageTV HD200 I can play back any BluRay/DVD in the server rom drive on the HD200. The internal slim DVD/BR combo drives are a little too pricey for my taste right now, so I will probably go with an external.

Well, looks like my replacement O/S drive just got delivered today, so I should have everything to really move forward with the build. The only thing I am missing is extra Sata cables as I have a feeling the ones I have are not going to be long enough to reach from the HDD cage to the SATA controller. I will just order some more from Newegg tomorrow, it will give me enough time to get the O/S drive installed and WHS running for a few days before I start migrating the pooled drives over.

Monoprice.com has always been a good source of cables for me. A couple days burning in the OS drive is probably a good idea.

Thanks, I forgot about Monoprice!!! I should have some measurements tonight but I think I am going to need at least 5 3ft cables (the ones i have are 2ft or 1.5ft)

I just added some pictures (see 4th post on page 1).

- I added the 8 port Sata Controller Card. Oddly enough it doesn't seem to work with my internal Rom drive (I kept getting failure to initialize errors) but had no issues recognizing a HDD
- Another neat thing I found out about the case, it comes with a "Screw Farm", so you just pull out the screws from the case and use (mostly for the HDD cages)
- Installed a few addins (Advanced Admin, Disk Management, SagetV)
- I was originally planning on throwing my 2250 tv tuner card in, but may hold off for a little. I will test out the system with my HDHomerun first
- I need to order some more Sata cables and need a few Sata to Molex connectors. I should have by mid week which will give me enough time to let SHAWSHANK run on its own before I attempt to move my MSS drives over.

I couldn't find a midget who was willing to take a picture with the Chenbro shipping box, but my son was more then happy to:

That's a huge box, and I always loved playing in them as a kid, how long until he's sliding down the stairs in it? :D

Sounds like good progress, I'm interested to hear how it goes with TV tuner hooked up...

Excellent pics!
BTW, I agree with having a BD drive on the server.

So just checked online and it appears the last pieces I need to complete SHAWSHANK have arrived. I orded an addition 5 3ft SataII cables, 2 Molex Y Splitters (for the HDD cages), and a few cable sleeves to try and tidy things up. Hopefully I can get this set up today so I can test out the remaining HDD cages, and then possibly start the migration of the HDDs from my MSS/TR4M to SHAWSHANK by this weekend (if all goes well my wife will be in the hospital this weekend and I will have the house to myself  )
