Kill-a-watt tests Norco RPC-4220, stock fans, Gigabyte MB (specified in 1st post by Cavediver), same ram, same power supply, 65W processor (instead of 45W processor), slim DVD drive, Kingston SSD As drives were added they were WD15EADS. Off: 0.13 amps / 15.6 watts On / idle - only system drive: 0.95 amps / 114 watts On / idle - 2 drives: 1.02 amps / 124 watts On / idle - 4 drives: 1.1 amps / 134 watts I expect about 5 watts per drive at idle, 10 at full, just like the media smart, so with 20 drives I am expecting less than 350 watts. Haven't loaded all 20 drives yet, the sound is giving me a headache so I measured that again. 66 dba 1ft from rear, 68 dba 1 foot from side, 72 dba 3 feet (THREE FEET) from front! The sucker is a wind tunnel. Thank you Cavediver for going first, I know you mentioned others have on the H forums (and I read a lot of those posts), but this is an easier to read forum for the less experienced. I think I'll finally set up my MSS as a photo server. |

How do the temps compare with the 120mm fans compared to the stock fans? I know you said it was cooler than the replacement fans you used but wasn't sure how those compare originally. Here in Tampa where lately it is hitting 100 heat during the day is definitely a concern. Also did you replace the rear fans or just left the stock ones? |

I am surprised that with 4 drives you are doing 134 watts. My Supermicro with nine drives, 7 fans and a quad core is doing only 140watts at idle and 160 at full load. Maybe it's the fans, I am using a 6 channel fan controller to slow the chassis fans down to half their normal running rpm and it is still cooler than I anticipated with cpu running in the 20'sC and drives running in the low 30'sC. It also is a lot quieter. I do like the fan modifications cavediver has done but the supermicro is only a 3u rackmount. |

Showing 146 to 157 watts with system drive plus 16 WD15EADSs right now, idle. Shows 0.07 KWH for 30 minutes - so that would be 3.36KWH a day (at idle) if I am doing the math correctly, it will notch up when I add the last four drives and even more when I start to use the system, but now I can set the WHS to sleep when necessary using Lights Out or other add-ins that had issues with the MSS in the past. Once again, stock fans are attrociously loud, but drive a lot of air into and out of the unit. I moved the unit to my home office rack today. 67 decibels at 7 1/2 feet in a small 12' x 12' room, high pitched whine. The drives are running 89-92 degrees with the coolest drives on the sides and the hottest drives in the middle. The MSS is currently running 8 drives (4 in MSS and 4 in Addonics eSATA case) and they are 95 to 100.4 - all Farenheit. Hottest in MSS is the top drive, a WD20EADS. Cooler drives are in the Addonics case. Both systems (Norco and MSS) are at idle. Ambient air temp in the room is 82 degrees (I live in Phoenix), so +7 to +10 for the Norco and +13 to +18+ for the MSS. |

That's consistent with what I was running in Florida (~86-92F) with ambient air at 85F. In NY running 76-82F with ambient air at 74F. You can probably benefit from the new fan system in cooler running and noise, however the back exhaust fans will still be loud unless you use some kind of fan controller. |

With the stock fans, I was getting low 90's F for the drive temps. But that was with 4-80mm screaming fans, each pulling almost 90 cfm each. Now I'm getting mid 90's to 100 F with the 3-120mm fans pulling 68.54 cfm each and the box is silent. I put two Noctua NF-R8's in the rear. |

Thanks. I think I may try leaving the stock fans on in the rear and swapping the fans in the center for the 120s. I am hoping by replacing the center fans I can bring the noise down to a more tolerable level. |

I added 2 more 2TB drives to Andromeda tonight and moved all of the drives around to try to solve my cold boot problem with the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards. The cold boot problem was solved by fully populating card 1 with 8 drives and populating card 2 with 3 drives on one backplane. Andromeda is at 17.4 TB now. I set the SASLP bios settings as follows: Card 1 BIOS Settings: Int13H: Disable Silent Mode: Disable Halt on Error: Disable Staggered Spin Up Time: Number of Devices per Group: 8 Group Spin Up Delay(s): 0 HDD-Detect Time(s): 5 Card 2 BIOS Settings: Int13H: Disable Silent Mode: Disable Halt on Error: Disable Staggered Spin Up Time: Number of Devices per Group: 8 Group Spin Up Delay(s): 0 HDD-Detect Time(s): 5 Disk Management screenshot below:

Backplane in, one suggestion for those with tight cable fits is that they might want to cut the hole on the left side (facing the rear of the case) where the SAS connectors are so it is open to the side. I wasn't going to do that, but ended up grabbing my metal cutter out to make it open because of the tight fit. The power definitely has to be done just like Cavediver or it won't work. So instead of the oval on the left I now have a U - smoothed the edge with electrical tape to play it safe. Easier to fit into the case too. I put in the next higher CFM level Scythe Slipstreams, the 33.4dba (or close to that) with nearly 90CFM output instead of 67, no noise. Replaced the rear fans with 34dba Scythe S-flex fans - no issues. 2 Dell XPSs in my rack are noisier. FYI: the SAS cables I bought from NewEgg (from 3ware SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 ARE direction specific). |
