The Disk Management wireframe was one of the Norco wireframes available for download on the Disk Management website. I made a few minor alterations to it. In order to get a decent price on the fan board, I had 10 made, so I'm going to sell the extras to recoup the cost. What I still don't understand is why 4-17 dBA fans made more noise than 3-27 dBA fans? |

Here's some pictures of the raw fan boards. The only thing you have to do is move the power backplane from the 80mm fan board to this board. All of the screws connecting the board to the box can be re-used. The 120mm fan board is wider so the SFF-8087 and sata cables need to feed through the holes in the bottom of the board.

I conducted an informal experiment on the stock fans using a sound level meter. I just got my case this week (as a note - the case now has 2 2.5 inch drive trays. Only the slim DVD slot is open to the front). Building about the same as cavediver - watched his lead, processor might be the only change. At 1 foot exposed to the fans, 68 decibels on C weighting, on A it was in the 72-73 range. At 3 feet exposed to fans, 66 decibels, it really didn't get any softer sounding to me either. These fans have a higher pitched whine. I'll probably put them into my rack as is for now and see what it sounds like, but will be send a PM to CaveDiver for the 120mm bracket. |

I couldn't stand being in my office with the stock fans running. The combination of the high pitch whine and the overall loudness was driving me crazy. |

PM sent on buying a bracket. Would like the final price shipped to Tempe, AZ and how to compensate you please. Ran into part of the AHCI issue, I couldn't get WHS to install when AHCI was active at first. Once the drivers are loaded was there another issue? |

Anyway, the AHCI issue was challenging. I had to move the OS drive to the onboard sata port 4 and change ports 0-3 in the bios to AHCI, leaving ports 4 & 5 as IDE. Then reboot the server and load the AHCI drivers. After reboot, I got a message that the system found new hardware (PCI Device). When I clicked on the message, it asked to install the drivers, which I did again. After installing the drivers, I rebooted the server and went back into the bios and changed ports 4 & 5 to "As SATA Type" which makes them AHCI just like ports 0-3. I then moved the OS sata cable back to port 0 and rebooted the server again, this time all of the drives came up in AHCI mode. Before I did this, WHS would not load as it would just go into a "boot loop" unless I had all of the drives set to IDE. Keep in mind that changing the MOBO to AHCI is different with Intel based MOBOs. AHCI is much easier to set up if you set it up in the MOBO bios before you install the OS. |

Not sure what is up with the PM, it shows on my end - trying again. I did what you did, saw that in another post on WGS. Originally tried to install with AHCI active and it failed, same BSOD that the loop shows. I have an intel board which I used to load WHS. Set up AHCI in the bios and then loaded the drivers using F6. You have to load them twice, once at the start of setup and then again at start of boot off disk. I could never get the second request to F6 the drivers unless I used a USB floppy on the first request. Doesn't seem to work very well using a usb stick. It worked very slick with the floppy and gave me the chance to load all storage drivers. |
