I was looking through the backlinks to this site and came across this build in Japan that references Andromeda as inspiration, and thought you all would like to see it. :)

Good point, I should have shared this translated link though it's still a bit clumsy it makes it easier to figure out. I like that case he's using.

That's the Backblaze case.

@Cavediver, I'm assuming the 32 drive limitation is a physical drive limitation.
You probably already know 3TB drives will be coming this summer.
That could net you 60TB......

At that point build a new WHS (when the next version comes out). 3TB drives will be expensive for at least a year and a half based on past numbers.

I'm waiting for the new WD20ears drives to hit $140 to $145 then I'll start putting those in my 4220.

What benefit if any should we expect from the new WD20ears (they are 64 vs 32 for the current ones, correct)?

Probably nothing for our uses - could have just said the latest model of 2TB, but I don't think the WD20eads are going to hit the $140 price before they are gone. $175 on Dell and Amazon, $180 on NewEgg, and $185 on Buy.com today.

The WD15ears are already down to nearly same price as the eads version.

Post subject:  Re: Andromeda

Reading that the "ears" drives are having problems with WHS due to 4k sector size. So may be going for some more wd15eads drives if I can locate more.

@cavedover or others useing the AOC-SASLP-MV8.
Does that card support Hot Swap, if the backplane also supports it?

Such as you Norco cases.
Dbone I know you went with a different backplane does your Chenbro's support hotswap?

Thanks

Has any of you looked at this controller? ARC-1300IX-16
I am finding it in the low $300's it's pci-e x4, can use the sff-8087 cables in a Norco case.
2 would be more than enough, and leave plenty of growth room slot wise.
And privide a bit of qrowth for the modders to add more drives.
On that note has anyone thought of stacking two norco 4220's?
Have a machine shop remove the bottom out of the upper case and leave the top off the lower case.
A strip of sheet metal down each side to bind them together.
CaveDivers fan mods all around.
3 X ARC-1300IX-16 = 48 * (2TB) = 96TB raw (Realistically 40 or 80TB till 3tb drives are available)
Just where could ya hang the other 8 drives.

The super mucro 8 port card runs $99-$120 you would need three if you wish to avoid using Mobo ports. putting you at near the price range using three slots.

If you use the Asus P6T7 SuperComputer board with 7 slot of PCI-e not a problem but the board is ~$400 vs a ~$200 with say three pci-e slots.

But if you want to use you WHS as part of your media system where do you put your Tuners, video card, audio card?

HDHomeruns? ~$140 each X2 $300
Then wiring a long run HDMI from your server to you main viewing area, Two cat5 cables and ports + an IR/RF blaster.
Ya just cant have a ~40 drive beast whining away next to your TV, the MSS about drove me batty.

Im just rambling now, you can ignore me.

Post subject:  Re: Andromeda

I have built a similar setup using the norco case, my MOBO is a asus p6 v2 delux with a i920 processor 4gb ram and the same 2 Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8, as well as the kingston 128 ssd drive for the OS,

The problem Im running into is that the first four drives are running on the mobo sata ports and the rest of the drives are on the saslp-mv8's
If im streaming a movie off of the mobo drives the system idle cpu usage goes up to 99% and the movies stops playing for about 1min or hangs up the movie altogether, any movies playing off of any of the other drives play with no problem,

At first i thought it was the demigrator issue everyone else seems to complain about but there was no cpu usage or utilization of that program the last couple of times i checked after the movie hung up.

any help is appreciated

Post subject:  Re: Andromeda

Are you running the mobo ports as IDE or AHCI? I usually run nothing off the mobo ports except for the SSD or system drive, all the pool drives are off MV8's. If I have room I will use mobo ports for non controlled drives to install applications on or to use as backup drives.
