Hi Cavediver,

If you have time, would you measure the width of the case in the middle? I've read on two sites that the Norco 4220 can be a tight fit into some racks.

I am starting to accumulate all the pieces for my DIY WHS (I will start a thread once I get it going). I was looking at the Norco but decided to go with this Chenbro Chassis. It will hold 15+1 drives and comes with foot stands (It is rackmount compatible but hopefully it never comes to that in my home!!!).

I've pretty much got Andromeda finished now. I received and installed the replacement sata backplane. It's going to be a couple of months before I can get the 120mm fan board as the metal shop needs 4 - 6 weeks lead time. So for the mean time, I've ordered 6 Noctua NF-R8 fans which should be here tomorrow. With the SSD, LP and Green drives, the temps are running in the low 90's F for the drives and 21C - 25C for the CPU. I also purchased and installed an Intel Gigabit CT network adaptor which should be better than the onboard Realtek network adaptor. I've also purchased, received and assembled an Istar W022U open server rack. I've installed 1 WD 1TB Green, 2 WD 2TB Green, and 4 Seagate 1.5TB LP drives for a total of 10.12 TB. I still have 13 open drive bays, so plenty of room to expand. I've started copying files over which at 10 TB is going to take awhile. After I initially copied a couple of .m2ts files over, I enabled the guest account, set up an smb share on my Popcorn Hour and was able to watch a blu-ray movie while another file was copying to the same drive. I've never been able to do this with the MSS as the video would studder and ultimately freeze if there was too much drive activity on the MSS (i.e., balancing). I've already copied over my Music folder and will be installing the Squeezebox Server WHS addin soon as well as myiHome http server software. I'm looking around for a good price on a rack mount APC UPS. If anyone knows a good place to buy one, let me know. Below are a few more photos of the nearly finished server and a screenshot of the Disk Management addin to date.

Wow!
That is disgusting - I love it!
I may have to build one of those too.

I guess I could always use it to heat the house in the winter too. ;)

My MSS gets hotter than Andromeda. In fact, Andromeda is not really generating any heat at all.

Cavediver, That's exactly what I found with my Supermicro Storage Server. Generates very little heat even with a quad core processor and runs on not much more power than the MSS if you run more than 4 drives. I have 9 drives in the Supermicro and it runs 3.56 killowatts per day vs an MSS with 7 drives(5 drive enclosure) running 2.996.

I changed all 6 fans tonight to Noctua NF-R8's. Andromeda is finally quiet. I'll have to give it a while to determine how the lower CFM's of the Noctua fans will affect the temps. I don't own a Kill-a-watt meter yet, but I'll probably buy one soon so I can determine the total power usage.

I used a 6-channel fan controller to quiet down the main fans and have a large cooler with 120mm which is very quiet. I'm totally impressed with the Q6600 quad core, plenty of horsepower and runs very cool(high 20's to low 30's C). It's a 3U case, so plenty of room, and good airflow. Drives run in the low 30's C with WD drives running in the high 20's C.

Cavediver, I noticed the you don't show SMART data on drive 5,6,7. 5 I understand because that's your SSD but why don't 6 & 7 show. I'm using pcix MV8 and it passes thru SMART data as well as motherboard sata connectors.

Drive 5 is the SSD. Drives 6 & 7 are drives connected to the sata ports on the mobo. I have SMART enabled in the bios, but for some reason, Disk Management can't seem to grab the data from the onboard sata ports. The rest of the drives are connected to the MV8's and Disk Management as you can see shows the temp data. Maybe I'm missing something in the bios that is not enabling the SMART data to pass through?

Erail - I meant to ask, why did you choose to go with the Q6600? That is the same CPU in my desktop (I do a lot of heavy lifting with that machine), but would think a dual core like the AMD 5050 would be more then enough for a WHS.

The Q6600 is an all purpose processor - 4 cores at 2.4 ghz - Not lightening fast but good. On a desktop I prefer something that is a faster processor, dual core. I don't do a lot of heavy processing on the desktop, I leave that for the servers. On the server I run emule, email and do alot of video conversion. The Supermicro is a capable server that can do most anything.

You are doing with your server what I do with my desktop pc (i.e. especially a lot of video conversion) which explains why you are using the Q6600. I was planning on keeping that function with the PC. Thx for clarifying

I received and installed the 120mm fan board today. I used Scythe SY1225SL12M fans which are advertised to run at 1200 RPM and put out 68.54 CFM at 24 dBA. Andromeda is absolutely silent now as opposed to the sound level with the 4- Noctua fans which are advertised to run at 17 dBA each. Andromeda was quiet with the 80mm Noctua's, but is silent with the 120mm Scythe fans. The drive temps are running just slightly cooler with the 120mm fans as opposed to the temps with the 4-80mm fans. Below are some photos and screenshots.
