I want to attempt something similar (but probably on a bit smaller scale to start). How loud is the Norco case? I live in a condo and plan to keep it in the den (has no door).

Could I swap out the fans to make it almost completely quiet?

With the 120mm fans, Andromeda is quieter than my MSS + the three external enclosures. Andromeda, now at 34 TB, has 19 drives in it including the SSD OS drive. Andromeda lives in my office about 6 feet away from my desk and the sound is audible but not too much. I could make it completely silent with lower RPM fans, but then my drive temps would increase. I've found a good balance of sound level and drive temps that I'm happy with.

Awesome.. I find the MSS quiet enough. Does the Norco case with the stock fans sound like a jet engine?

Yes. The stock 5000 rpm 80mm fans are very loud. In addition to being very loud, they put off a very high pitch wine that was totally intolerable. I could hear it all over the house.

I now have drives in all of Andromeda's 20-3.5" drive bays. 37.5 TB total by raw disk size. Disk Management addin indicates 35.982 GB and the Server Storage tab indicates 35.14 TB. I recently bought 2 of the new Samsung Spinpoint F3EG 2TB drives to test out. So far I'm liking them. They are running as low or lower temps than the Seagates. For some reason, the WD Greens still run hotter than either the Seagate LP or the Samsung EG drives. I still have 3-1.5TB drives in Andromeda which I will replace with 3-2TB drives soon (waiting on another good sale at Newegg  ), bringing the total raw storage to 40TB. Duplication is on for everything but the video share for now. I'll be turning that on next week which will leave me with about 9 TB of total available storage, (4.5 TB with duplication). I've attached a screenshot of the Disk Management addin tab showing all 21 drives. So far, Andromeda has met or exceeded all of my performance expectations. The only issue I still have is the AMD AHCI driver issue not allowing SMART data (drive temps) to pass through the MOBO SATA ports. This will not likely be solved on an AMD platform.

Thanks for the update, Cavediver, and I love that wireframe. 8)

Thanks. The wireframe took me a long time to get right. The current version of the Disk Management addin has a lot of problems when it comes to identifying drives and their locations. Hopefully, the new version will fix that problem. I had to delete the xml file and reboot the server several times to get the addin to properly recognize the drives and their paths. I still have three drives that I don't think are indicating the correct path, but I got them to display correctly in the addin despite the incorrect path.

Be sure to provide feedback to Sam on this, I expect he'd be interested in hearing of your experience.

Andromeda is complete as originally intended (40 TB media storage server) with all data duplicated. I now have all 20 drive bays populated with 2TB LP, Geen and Ecogreen drives, and all 1.5 TB drives removed. Server storage indicates 36.5TB with 9.46 TB free and Disk Management indicates 37379 GB with 9690 GB free. I had a problem with one of the Samsung drives. It kept dropping out of the storage pool as missing, but running chkdsk /r on it didn't show any problems. So I RMA'd it and will keep the replacement as a backup. In order to remove the 1.5 TB drives and keep the storage balanced, I added a Sans Digital TR4M and installed the little card with two (2) esata ports. So now, I also have a 4 bay Sans Digital TR4M attached which will allow me to add another 8 TB of storage space if I need it. The transfer speeds between the TR4M and the internal drives was very fast. PP3 did a good job of balancing the storage between all of the drives. Below are a few shots of Disk Management and an internal shot showing the new card and the 120mm fans.

Looks great. I added the TR4M eSATA card to Shawshank as well, so I figure that would give us anywhere from 8 to 10 additional hdds (using 2 of either the TR4M and TR5M)

I already have 22 drives in Andromeda. 1-ssd system drive, 1-dvd drive & 20-2TB drives, so I can only add 10 more before I reach the 32 drive limit of WHS.

As stated previously in this thread and shown in photos, Andromeda lives in my home office in a mobile rack. And yes, I have an APC UPS attached.

Have you heard anything about this limitation being increased with Vail?

No I haven't. All I know is it's a limitation of drive extender.

I was looking through the backlinks to this site and came across this build in Japan that references Andromeda as inspiration, and thought you all would like to see it. :)
