While 80GB is the recommended minimum a smaller drive will work (as long as you have other data drives), especially now that it is not used as a landing pad and as long as you upgrade to PP2 early-on. I had a system running a few weeks ago with a 40GB System Drive (not SSD). Worked fine.

Hi,

So, your saying that the install will install on a 40 gig drive. Creating a 20 gig system partition and a less than 20 gig data storage (formating required space). Then of course add extra drives to the pool. I thought the install checks the drive size and won`t continue ?

Thanks.

The last time I tried it the drive size was not tested. I doubt they would have changed that, especially since the space is no longer needed for a landing pad.

I can confirm that WHS will NOT load onto a Hardrive that is less than 80GB.

I just tried to install on a 40GB and recieved an error that a suitable harddrive of greater than 65GB was not found.

I had the same experience when I tried to install on a 55GB Virtual PC drive - it gave the same message about needing greater than 65 GB.
I went up to 80 GB and it worked fine.

What level is your install disk, original(prior to PP1) or newer(with PP1 on it)?

Edit: I suspect that you are using an original disk, with the new one the check for size is no longer there.

It was the 120 day evaluation copy with PP2 already on it.

Well, I give up. Don't know what they are doing - some check some don't.

I'm almost positive there is no media with PP2 on it, is it possible you meant PP1?

Back in June when I was purchasing an OEM copy of WHS, there was NOT a version available with PP2. Only PP1 versions.

On the server desk top it says "Evaluation copy 3790 (Service Pack Two) "

I'm not 100% sure if I also saw this there before I shut it down, carried it into the other room & connected it to the network to update.

So, it is very possible that it was PP1 disk.

I had ordered the disks from MS & they were shipped in the mail.

So now the question becomes,

How do you install a copy of WHS PP2 onto a 40 GB drive if all disks ship with PP1?

That would make good wiki.

Do you have to slipstream the PP2 update?

If so, how?

I'll be willing to give it a try if anyone can help me get started.

PP2 gets downloaded during the updates after you install, is that what you're asking?

The problem that I had with the 40 GB drive was that it never got far enough a long during loading, to be able to update to PP2.

In fact within a couple minutes of starting to load the OS, I would get the error "Suitable Harddrive of 65GB or more not found"

So, How are some people getting WHS to load on a 40GB drive?
