This may have been asked alot already, sorry I did do a search.

I picked up a used EX490 from CL the other day (for 50 bucks no HDDs), after looking into upgrading it and what not, I wonder if its worth it with CPU upgrade, RAM, and a debug board, we are looking at around 250 to 300 bucks. I can build a faster server for less. But I have a conflict, I love the form factor. Love it I always have loved this server and was excited when I found it. Is there anything even close to this size and shape, in the market? I was looking at the HP micro servers but they are too low powered. I run a Plex server and trans-code alot, I also run full backups on clients and have a PXE boot going. Links would be great, I have looked at lot of the mini ITX cases and I have not seen anything quite like the Mediasmart servers.

The closest thing I have found is this ... 6811128074

Let me know if you have any suggestions

Well I found this post

It has some good ideas in it, but none of these are quite what I am looking for

I realize this post should be moved to the DIY section, mods feel free to move it.

Hi manwdaplan welcome to the forums,

I too like the HP MSS SFF too but then there comes a time when you could out grow it. The unit it in your original post is actually made by CFI and the price looked quite nice too. That enclosure is larger than your EX490 but not exactly a monster. I have 2 similar enclosures and they are quite but the space for a mITX build is somewhat tight but not horrible.

Here is a case which Damian wrote about and later I actually purchased to house one of my servers ... uter-case/ Its actually a very nice case and while its larger than the first enclosure you posted its got plenty of room to work with and has a removable motherboard tray. Now I happen to like the mITX form factor but of late your seeing fewer and fewer boards being offered. If you go down this road just make certain you check the number of SATA ports the motherboard has and most have 4 but sometimes you might see one with 6. Most come with either a PCI x1 or X16 slot and I would urge you to think about the future need for adding a SATA Controller and make sure it will work in the motherboard. I would recommend a SATA Controller which has eSATA or one which has SATA ports which are port multiplier aware.

Good luck if you chose to build your own server.

'DIEHARD' That thing is awesome! UBER COOL!
If that came barebone and WHS was 64 bit and native 3TB drives, it would replace what I have now for sure!

Edit: I finally found the case for my DIY. It's on sale and has 5 hot swap. ... 6811112339

It's the best I could find.

The only thing that turned me off about the N40 or the new N54 HP Microserver.
The CPU is soldered in so would be difficult to upgrade.
Unless this has changed then it would be interesting to see folks bump up to an 8 core cpu or so.
Barring that I would look at the ML series of HP servers about the same size as a medium tower but some of the higher end models have dual cpu sockets
and you can have it in Intel or AMD flavors not to mention iLo support. (Remote power/KVM control)

Anyone using a bigger server and has used iLo knows how nice it is.
Built in temp sensors, fan speed info, health status you name it the works.
