Well, my time with my HP ex475 has come to a fork in the road. I have filled up the bays, then upgraded the size of drives. Now my free space is looking like I need to start planning my next move. What I am thinking is migrating the data to a custom build. I have parts kicking around that should be more than enough power. An older lga775 x3210 xeon (quad core) 4gb ram, and plenty of hdds laying around.

Has anyone moved the whs licence from an hp mediasmart box to a custom box? It only came with recovery disks. I have no issues moving all of my important data onto a external drive or two to ensure safety. But can I move the windows licence over? Im trying to be cheap and avoid spending money for this move. I also really like drive extender and would like to cling to it for as long as I can.

Any thoughts?

I did it once using the COA Key off the bottom of an EX470 I converted to become a Port Multiplier. The key difference here is I owned a copy of WHS OEM so I use the disks for the install and the key from the EX470 and it worked for me. I should also mention the installation and recovery process is quite different where by you will need to collect the 32 bit drivers for the hardware your using.

So I will just need to get my hands on a dvd of whs. That may be easier said than done.
