I read the thread regarding upgrading the internal 640Gb hard drive and I'll most likely be going throught the steps in the near future.

I currently have 4 * 500GB external passports plugged in and I am assuming that my media is getting striped across them as well as the internal hard drive. Is this correct?

As a sanity check my next question is whether I will lose my media by upgrading the internal hard drive and performing a 'Server 'Recovery'?

Last question - How about upgrading the external drives? Can I power down the unit and replace one of the 500GB with a 1 Terabyte without losing data?

Thanks in advance.

WHS does not stripe data across disks. If you have Duplication enabled, then WHS will make sure that every file is stored on more than one physical disk. If you have Duplication enabled, you should be able to replace your internal System drive via Server Recovery without losing any data, though you will possibly lose part or all of your Client Backups since they are not duplicated.

To upgrade the external drives, you should first Remove the drive via the Server Console, then connect the new drive and Add it via the Server Console. You will need sufficient free space on the other drives to offload all data from the drive you need to remove.

If you've got this much storage needs, I'd advocate that you consider selling your LX195 (or donate to a family member or friend who doesn't have a backup solution) and replace it with an EX490 or perhaps the new Data Vault X310 which will give you 4 internal drive bays that are more reliable, less cluttered, and more expandable. USB drives are not the best choice for long-term use and storage.
