Anybody know what are the part numbers for the case fans for the EX 470?
Mine have stopped showing a RPM value but are still turning. I cannot get fans directly from HP, so I have to try ordering the parts (fans) by their part number.

Your best bet is to remove the fans and check the fan for Manufacturer information off the fan itself. The information should be on the center of the fan. From there you should be able to find what your looking for. In the event that the fan label is in Chinese take a picture and send it to me and I will have the people at work translate the information off it.

Just out of curiousity did you lose the fan speeds after you may have disassembled and reassembled your EX470?

Just watch your CPU temp to make sure its still being cooled properly if not then I suggest you install the MSS FAN CONTROL ADDIN to see if you can manipulate the fan speeds if so then you can bump up the speed if your CPU tends to run HOT. I have 2 mombo's here for the EX470 that I am working with one will not control the fan speed at all and the fans run at full speed the other I can manipulate the fan speed with the MSS FAN CONTROL ADDIN but both mombo's do not display the RPM STATUS of the fans.

Thank you for your reply and yes I lost fan speeds after I installed the new CPU (AMD 1640). When I noticed the fans not working I reinstalled the old CPU; it did not make a difference. In talking to HP tech service, they suggested that a full re-install of the operating system would correct the situation; they thought it was a software problem. This I did but to no avail. I thought the board that the fans and hard drive were connected to had failed, but HP does not send out parts to customers just HP service centres. I tried different computer case fans (could only find 3 wire only) and I got a RPM reading.

When I had the unit apart, changing the CPU (back to the AMD 1640), I tried to see how to change the fans, but without destroying the case I did not see how to do this.

The first problem I had with the new CPU is increased heat. I have a small house fan in the front of the Server and it keeps the system cool (between 35c idle and 55c working). In the last few days I tried the MSS FAN CONTROL ADDIN but it did not change the values of the old HP fans (0 RPM) nor the 3-wire fans (2500 RPM). I am also guessing the 4th wire is speed control.

The reason I am doing all of this is because the server is causing my home network to go down. My server will run for awhile (3 to 7hrs) and then for some reason it causes the router to drop the internet connection and the connections to the other computers on the system. If I pull the plug from the server to the router, all connection is restored (2 to 5 min). Of course I have to a hard reboot to access the server again to repeat this process. In exploring this condition with the HP Server community, I came across a solution that the server CPU is too hot at boot-up and that it causes the network/router to go down. The solution was to use the MSS FAN CONTROL ADDIN to keep the server cool right from the beginning.
I have always had my outside fan turned on before I turn on he server, and when I check the readings, as soon as I am able, the temp is always in the low 40s or high 30s. I personally do not think this is the problem as it is a recent occurrence as the current setup (and CPU) have been in operation for over 4 months. I initially thought is was a virus, so I installed AVG for servers and other than removing a few tracking cookies the server (I also ran full system virus scans on the other computers as well) and all were clean.

I am sorry I do not know what a mombo is, in this context (I am assuming it is a fan system).

I will try to remove or at least view the info on the fans for the Manufacturer information.

Sorry for the long reply.
Thanks again for your help,
Bob

inspectorgadget,

MOMBO is short for Motherboard. A while back I lost my ability to control the fans on my original server after having the case apart. When I reassembled the server I connected the fans off by 1 pin and when I turned the server on the fans did not start up I shut the server down and thats when I noticed the fan connections were off by a pin. This was because I rushed through the process, when you do something often without a hitch you start to take shortcuts and it cost me. This is my error but my fans stayed at HIGH SPEED so the server runs quite cool and after a few headaches it works perfectly fine but I also lost the health monitors.

What I tend to read often is that when problems such as yours arise it generally occcurs after a system modification be it RAM or a Processor Upgrade so I wonder when you noticed the problem did you happen to notice if your fan connections were installed properly or perhaps maybe you just did not notice at all?

I purchased another MOMBO with a known bad LAN Port which I did a work around. It too had an issue with displaying the fan RPM but the fans were controllable. Both MOMBO's were installed in the same case so I do not suspect the fans are the issue rather the chip on the MOMBO that actually controls the FANS and Health Monitors. Some call this chip the Winstron Chip and while I am not certain I believe its the ITE IT8705F chip which is not user replacable.

What I do not know at this time is the FAN Wiring configuration but I believe one of the wires is for speed control and if the wire were removed it might kick your fans to full speed. I recall reading someone doing this recently but until I reveiw the fan wiring I will not know for certain. I guess this weekend I will open up and EX470 and pull the fans out to identify the fans and obtain the wire specs on them and look for a replacement fan and maybe then I will be able to recommend better what you can do to push the fans at full speed or recommend replacement fans that are designed to run at full speed with enough CFM to keep your server cool.

Hi John,
The server operation has not changed. It still freezes up the network. :?
I still do not see how to get at the fans without ruining the case.
I think I will go back to the original CPU and see if that makes a difference.

I haven't opened my MSS in a long time now, but look closely at the fans when you remove the backplane to swap out the CPU. I know they can be removed and I THINK it was through the frame from the front with the backplane and disk drives removed.

Are BOTH fans problematic? If just one you might try swapping the connectors to see if the problem switches to the other fan (isolates it to either fan or internal to the logic).

And check (yet again!) to make certain those are not mis-connected, either shifted a pin or reversed somehow.

ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS?

The fans are on rubber vibration mounts and are mounted to the back of the case in keyhole type slots. You slide the fan about 1/4" to one side (can't remember which side but the upper and lower fan move in opposite directions) and then pull them forward. Its best to remove the drive trays and backplane to get better access to the fans. Oh, and don't force them or you'll shear the rubber mounts off like I did to one of my fans.

When I upgraded my server to the LE1640 CPU, I also replaced both case fans to higher CFM type. Check them out from the link below. They run at a higher RPM and are less noisy than stock fans.

I do not have my MSS apart at the moment to confirm, but I thought the fans were THREE wire attachments to the MOBO (or, in this case, the MSS backplane)? The writeup at the llink you provided is for a FOUR wire configuration.

Could you confirm what is actually there? Thanks in advance...

The fans in the EX470/475 have four wires. They are +12V, OV, speed control and speed sensor.

Thanks.... I must have been remembering the fans wires in my desktop...

Apologies to all for any confusion!
