Sorry to hear about your father, Rob.
The fan speed report/control not working is most likely because you've connected the fans off by one pin - that seems to burn out the sensor/etc. That's what happened to mine -- I've replaced them as recommended here and new ones work great.
But if you still want to part with it, I might take it. Mine seems to have problems with ethernet port, on top of everything else... ugh!

giltesa: send me your address in a PM, I'll check how much it is. Should be able to send it as a normal letter, I think...

I tried changing the fans but that didn't help so most likely its the fan control circuitry on the MB that went bad.

During my experimenting with my new (to me) EX470, I managed to make it so that NO lights are active at all (other than the NIC and Power LED's).

What could I have done to achieve this result, and how could I reverse it?

I had the same problem while playing with my new EX470. All the lights were out except the power. After a day of reading manuals and pulling what little hair I have out, I found out what was wrong. I had left the LED Brightness Control sliding switch in the far left position. All I did was slide the switch to the right and all the lights started to work again. This most likely is not your problem but you never know.

Good luck.

William: that IS our problem, but the root cause is different. For us, the brightness is lowered to minimal in hardware because of burnt out electronics. Glad you don't have that problem :)

I got it repaired

Change the transistor burned a new one, and now all lights are lit.

What joy!

Fry-kun and Comp1962, thanks for your help.

The can is in Japan, the purchase two years ago when I was on vacation.
They also sell standard cans. But these others are pretty.
I love the grape Fanta, this very rich :beerme:

Any idea if HP would perform this fix and how much they would charge? I have the exact same problem. I upgraded the memory and CPU in my MSS ex475 last June. Everything went as
expected, except that the LED lights stopped working. I took it apart (a few times) and made sure everything was connected properly, which it was, but the lights still didn't work. The power light is working and the USB port on the front works, so the connector in the front is fine. The fans are working properly. The memory and CPU were properly recognized and the machine is great, just not the LED lights. Note: I did notice errors in the Windows System log after the upgrade ("VCCP status is warning for exceeding the upper threshold, value = 1392 mV"). A second later, there would be an Informational message stating that the voltage was back to normal. Yesterday, trying to prepare for the v3 upgrade, I put the original CPU back in the MSS; no more VCCP errors. I don't know if this had anything to do with causing the issues with the lights, but replacing the CPU did not fix the lights.

Related to this, does anyone know how to put the MSS in Recovery Mode without lights? I tried guessing the number of seconds after pressing the power button, bu so far have not been successful.

Welcome to the community :mss:

It happened to me the same way.
Change the processor, everything was correct, but the lights stopped working.
Make sure the capacitor is not broken.

If the capacitor is blown easy to fix, or perhaps in any electronics shop in your town so you can fix.

Greetings.

Hi afalciani welcome to the forums and sorry to hear about your light issues with your server.

You can put your server into recovery mode by pulling out the system drive (The Bottom Drive) and turning the server on. It doesn't take very long before the server does go into recovery mode but because its headless I tell people to wait 15 mins just to make sure. Also make certain that no USB device is plugged into the bottom rear USB port.

Just make sure you remove the client software from the computer your using to recover your server but you will see that message during the recovery process. If during the recovery process it is not able to find your server then repeat the proceedure but this time directly connect the network cable in between the client and the server.

Should you need additional help please do not hesitate to come back and ask. Good luck with your upgrade to 3.0. If you have not done so there is a guide on this site to help you with the process which offers you some very good advise and there is another article regarding the 3.0 upgrade user experience that I recently wrote refrencing various message posts by users like yourself and its well worth reviewing before you begin the process.

Again Good Luck and hope your next post is one of a successful upgrade experience. You will enjoy the 3.0 very much!

Sometime the backplane is a bit tight when removing as a rule I use two hands to remove it, one for pulling and the other for guidance. I have never broken a capacitor but others have and the impact I believe would be for Hard Drives, Hard Drive LEDs and the FANS. If those are working properly then the BackPlane is probably ok.

Having said that there was a discussion going on in the forums regarding the Q1 MOSFET burning up causing the Loss of the FRONT LEDS. Its a very tiny component I remember trying to look at one and needed a magnifying glass to find it but the message thread might be worth reviewing at the link below.
