I have one of these unit. I loaded it up with 4 x 2TB drives. It worked great with my HP Media Quad Core/Windows7 32 bits until yesterday.
After transferring about 50GB of data on it, the directory structure self destructed. Now the operating system asked me to format this drive!

Any help would be much appreciated

Doesn't sound like an enclosure issue unless you're talking about a RAID failure with the RAID version of the probox... I don't think anyone's reported anything similar to what you are with the JBOD version....

Yes, I believe you are correct in that it is not a RAID failure, but rather, some sort of directory failure with 2TB drives. I have configured it as RAID 5, with a usable single volume of 6TB. I started using this with Vista but upgraded to Win 7 a couple of months ago.

err... that's not what I said and if I had to guess I would still say that it's some kind of RAID complication.

Despite the benefits of RAID, when asked, I generally discourage everyone I know from using it... unless its one of those rare cases where it's a server-grade RAID controller that's being put to good use... which is clearly not the case here.

I feel 'desktop raid' is just too quirky and failure prone to put to use and expect a trouble free experience.

Anyway that said, I don't own the RAID version of the ProBox and as a result can't really help you. If you choose to continue down the RAID path I highly recommend you read a few articles about the benefits of RAID 0+1 over RAID5.

Good Luck!

I like the HF2-SU2S2. Here's how I used it:
  • Purchased a basic "Mediasonic Pro Box 4" and 2 x 2Tb hard drives and connected it via eSATA to my server
  • Accessed my server through a Remote Desktop Connection to initialise and formatt the drives
  • Created a robocopy script that copied all my media from the server to the two hard drives
  • Loaded WHS2011 on the server
  • Downloaded and installed the 64-bit drivers for the SiliconImage 3531 Port Multiplier Chipset
  • Reconnected the HF2-SU2S2 and tested it

Now, do I need to do anything in particular to make the enclosure synchronise with my server? Is there a button to press or a setting to enable to have it power off and power on with my server?

[edit]I ran a RoboCopy script to copy my various shares from the HF2-SU2S2 to my three disk RAID-5 storage that is now part of my EX495 and here are the results of the transfer:
Code:
Audiobooks -> 2.02 Gb/Min
Books      -> 1.02 Gb/Min
Comics     -> 1.85 Gb/Min
Music      -> 1.83 Gb/Min
Photos     -> 1.77 Gb/Min

I think that's pretty good over eSATA[/edit]

Found it!

I had to press and hold the Sync button then let go until the Sync light went orange. This seemed to fix everything.

All here is the formula to make this work.

Windows Home Server 2011 (64bit) Windows 7 would probably work as well.
PCI-Express to Sata 2 with Silicon Image SIL3132 chipset
Media Sonic with 4x 2TB drive

RAID5 works perfectly!

After a year of futzing with this I am done!
